    150 years after an Aldeburgh woman began the campaign to allow women to vote, the woman who now represents her modern-day fellow constituents in Suffolk Coastal is welcoming news that Millicent Fawcett is to get a statue in the capital .

    The statue of Aldeburgh-born women's suffrage campaigner Millicent Fawcett will stand in Parliament Square alongside other global figures who have fought for democracy as an example to others who are still engaged in the struggle for equal rights.

    Sam Smethers, chief executive of the  Fawcett Society, external  [named after Millicent], said she was delighted she would "finally be honoured". 

    "A statue of her in Parliament Square will be a fitting tribute. Her contribution was great but she has been overlooked and unrecognised until now," she said. 

    "By honouring her we also honour the wider suffrage movement." 

  5. Greater Anglia wants to hear customers' thoughts on new trains published at 13:39 British Summer Time 3 April 2017

    Greater Anglia has released images of the designs for its new trains which will be introduced across the East Anglian network in 2019/20.

    The carriages will all be kitted out with wifi, plugs and USB points, air conditioning and new-style seats.

    The train operator wants passengers to give their feedback on what they think about the design and layout, in which £1.4bn is being invested.

    Millicent Fawcett began leading a mass campaign to get women the vote in 1866, but used peaceful methods while working alongside the Suffragettes , who employed different and more militant tactics.

    Prime Minister Theresa May paid tribute to the approach of the campaigner, born in Aldeburgh, and said: "The example Millicent Fawcett set during the struggle for equality continues to inspire the battle against the burning injustices of today. 

    "It is right and proper that she is honoured in Parliament Square alongside former leaders who changed our country. 

    "Her statue will stand as a reminder of how politics only has value if it works for everyone in society."

    A leading figure in the women's suffrage movement, born in Suffolk, is to be honoured with a statue in Parliament Square in London.

    Millicent Fawcett, who led the campaign for women's votes in 1866, will be the first woman to be honoured in this way. 

    A statue of Mrs Fawcett, who was born in Aldeburgh, will stand alongside the likes of Sir Winston Churchill and Nelson Mandela. 

    The centenary of the Representation of the People Act 1918 is being celebrated next year.

    The act was introduced thanks to campaigning by Mrs Fawcett and countless others and gave women over the age of 28 the right to vote.

    Lowestoft faced stiff competition to get money for the Ness Point project with 248 other funding applications from across the country considered by the government's Coastal Communities Fund.

    Projects worth £80m were bidding for a share of a £38.1m funding pot and Lowestoft managed to gain the full sum asked for. 

    Ness Point, which is currently marked by a horizontal circular plaque called the Euroscope, is dominated by the giant wind turbine known as Gulliver after a public vote.

    It is hoped Ness Point can become a landmark destination similar to Land's End or John O' Groats. 

    Stephen Baker, chief executive of Suffolk Coastal and Wavene, external y District Councils said: "Congratulations must go to the funding team who put together an outstanding bid, which entirely succeeded in its aims."

    Government money has also been pledged to projects in other parts of the county.

    The West Norfolk Coastal Corridor, where cycling paths and walking trails will be improved and Ipswich town centre will get £750,000 to boost an £8m scheme to regenerate the Suffolk waterfront and dock area.

    A new visitor centre is to be built at Britain's most easterly landmark, after Waveney District Council was told it would get more than £1m from the Department of Communities and Local Government for the scheme.

    The council, local businesses and community groups are celebrating the opportunity to create the visitor attraction at Ness Point in Lowestoft on what is currently the "unappealing semi-derelict green space and seafront promenade".

    It will be transformed in to an events and cultural heritage space, the council said.

    A woman, in her 70s, was mugged on her way to St Mary's Church in Haverhill on Sunday morning.

    She was pushed to the ground on Camps Road by the man, who then fled with her handbag. 

    The victim was treated at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge after being robbed at about 09:15.

    Police have appealed for any witnesses to come forward. 

    The attacker is described as in his 20s, dark-skinned with a dark beard and moustache and wearing a maroon-coloured hoodie and a beanie hat.

  16. Man charged with Lowestoft rapepublished at 10:01 British Summer Time 3 April 2017

    A man has been charged with the rape of a woman in her 30s in Lowestoft last week.

    Police were called to Marine Parade just before 14:00 on Thursday after a member of the public reported a woman had just left a flat there in a distressed state, and told him she had been raped.

    The 23-year-old was due to appear before magistrates in Norwich over the weekend.

    "There's no point in me standing here and saying we played well because people who were here will know that's not the case," said McCarthy.

    "The first half was a Championship scrap, which it was it always going to be, and then we gave a horrible goal away which changed the game and the atmosphere, which was horrible. We were horrible.

    "Then we've rescued it, and rescued a point. #

    "Bizarrely enough we're now six points clear of the drop as opposed to five, so if there's a silver lining I guess that's it."

    The driver of the car (who did not wish to be photographed) said he'd been heading to work with colleagues following in a car behind, when he swerved to avoid a pheasant and "the next thing I knew, the car was on its roof".

    No-one was injured and Suffolk Police said they had arrived and were awaiting recovery.

    Ipswich Town, external boss Mick McCarthy has defended the surprise selection of midfielder Jonathan Douglas for Saturday's 1-1 draw with Birmingham City .

    It was the 35-year-old's first league start since Boxing Day and it's fair to say the decision didn't go down well with a number of fans, who've been critical of his performances this season.

    "I was pleased with him," said McCarthy. "He kept going and I think he's an example to every young professional that doesn't play for a while, comes back in the team, and I didn't have to take him off after 60 minutes.

    "He's a really good senior pro is Dougie, which I think is proved by his performance today, despite the fact I'm getting grief for playing him and he's getting grief."

  20. Lucky escape as car overturns...published at 08:43 British Summer Time 3 April 2017

    This was the scene on B1080 between Freston and Holbrook at about 07:45... the car had overturned in the dip just before the main bend in the road as it was heading away from Ipswich.

    I checked with the driver, who was OK and said no-one had been injured, although he seemed a little shaken, unsurprisingly. 

    He said the police were on their way.

    The gap was too small for the number 92 bus to get through, but cars were able to pass.
