  10. Fidget spinners: Toys are 'noisy' and 'distracting'published at 11:43 British Summer Time 3 May 2017

An assistant headteacher has defended a decision to ban "distracting" fidget spinners.

    Fidget spinner

As we've reported, the devices were originally designed to help those with autism and ADHD but they have become the latest "must-have" toys at schools.

Elizabeth Bethell, the manager of Suffolk's autism services, said a blanket ban is not the answer.

Phil Hart, assistant headteacher at Holbrook Academy, said: "These devices are noisy and cause students to become less focused, turning their attention to the toy, rather than the teaching and learning which is taking place.

"It is true that a small proportion of students find 'fiddle toys' useful in helping them to aid their concentration and we have some who have been diagnosed to have these, but fidget spinners are not the answer."

He said a proper "fiddle toy" should enable pupils to "concentrate on the learning, not on the toy itself".

It's not only the waiting which has left Sayers feeling frustrated.

"It's all about the moment for me," she said. "None of the other stuff that would have come with it - sponsorship, profile, the actual medal itself - matters in the same way.

"I'd love to be able to transport myself back to standing on an Olympic podium, but I won't ever be able to do that. You have had the greatest moment of your life stolen from you."

"For example, not use weedkillers on their plants, not use slug pellets, think about hedgehogs' needs.

"They need to travel from garden to garden so they need little passageways and they need places to hide, such as piles of leaves," he said.

Elizabeth Bethell, the manager of Suffolk's autism services, said: "Schools need to make reasonable adjustments to aid a child's learning.
