  2. Ambulance service receives 9,000 calls in 72 hourspublished at 17:51 British Summer Time 2 May 2017

    Almost 9,000 calls were made to the East of England Ambulance Service over the three-day Bank Holiday weekend.

    Demand was up in Essex, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire, while there was a reduction in 999 calls in Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Suffolk, compared with the same period last year.

    Sunday was the busiest day of the weekend with more than 3,100 calls received. The service sent a response to 2,305 incidents that day.

    Robert Morton, chief executive, said: "Whilst many people in the East of England were enjoying an extended weekend, our managers, staff and volunteers were working hard to provide the best possible care to our patients.

    "I'd like to pay tribute to them for their efforts and dedication on what was another busy weekend."

  4. Dozzell at Portman Road until 2020published at 17:18 British Summer Time 2 May 2017

    Ipswich Town have extended the contract of young midfielder Andre Dozzell.

    The 18-year-old struggled to break into the first team this season, but is highly thought of at the club.

    Dozzell's new deal will run until 2020.

  5. Venue for Suffolk FA cup finals still in the balancepublished at 17:18 British Summer Time 2 May 2017

    There will be lots of Suffolk non-league football fans keeping an eye on Colchester United's result on Saturday evening. 

    A number of the Suffolk FA's cup finals are due to take place at the Western Homes Community Stadium, where the U's play their games. 

    But if Colchester qualify for the League Two play-offs, those ties will have to be moved to a selection of non-league grounds in Suffolk.

    Just a few hours in, and the hedgehog mural at The Swan in Ipswich is starting to take shape.

    Street artist ATM is painting the artwork as part of Suffolk Wildlife Trust's campaign to make the town more hedgehog-friendly. 

    BBC Radio Suffolk is also supporting the initiative and will be talking to the artist on Mark Murphy's Breakfast Show from 07:00 tomorrow.

    Ipswich Witches, external have confirmed the signing of Justin Sedgmen as replacement for the injured Nico Covatti.

    Team manager Ritchie Hawkins (pictured) is full of praise for his new rider: "He's a more than capable replacement and I think he'll fit in well with the team."

    Australia-born Sedgmen rides for Manchester-based Belle Vue in the Premiership, and is due to make his debut for the Witches at Foxhall on Thursday.

    It was standing room only for the 300 mourners at St Mary Magdalene church in Pulham Market, as crowds gathered for the funeral service of 18-year-old Dominic O'Neill.

    His mother Davina read a moving poem about the parting of a mother and son, and some of his closest friends fought back tears to deliver their own personal tributes to him.

    They talked of the "annoying car noises" that were his trade mark, and his sense of humour.

    "He was the funniest boy I've ever met... we will miss you will all our hearts."

    His former deputy head teacher at Archbishop Sancroft High School in Harleston, Rob Connelly, gave a reading from Corinthians and spoke of Dominic's love of cars, drumming and the importance of friendship.

    "Friends will also remember and treasure the incredible memories they have of being with Dominic," he said. 

    "Mates came first to Dom - a loyal friend who would always be present, whether it be a party, at the rec or another trip to McDonalds... no-one has a bad word to say about Dom... because there aren't any."

    A former pupil, Shania Scott, sang a version of Eric Clapton's Tears In Heaven.

    The service ended with Gary Barlow's Let Me Go.

    Dominic lost his life, alongside two friends - Kyle Warren and Billy Hines - when their black Ford Ka was in collision with a tree on the Tivetshall Road near Pulham Market at around 23:50 on Wednesday, 5 April.

  9. Suspected illegal immigrants 'just the tip of the iceberg'published at 16:46 British Summer Time 2 May 2017

    The harbourmaster at Waldringfield says the discovery of six suspected illegal immigrants at Orford on Sunday is just the "tip of the iceberg".

    Tony Lyon said the problem is the number of boats coming up and down the River Deben: "I think we're moving more away from the drugs issue.

    "It's people trafficking. They're coming in and they're just disappearing off into the area."

  10. Man in court after suspected illegal immigrants stranded in estuarypublished at 16:18 British Summer Time 2 May 2017

    A 48-year-old man has been remanded in custody after appearing in court in connection with the discovery of six suspected illegal immigrants on a boat which was marooned on a river estuary in Suffolk on Sunday.

    Hennadi Kurtoglu, who has been charged with facilitating the entry of illegal immigrants to Britain, has been sent to Ipswich Crown Court for trial at the end of May. 

    The vessel was found on the River Ore near Orford. 

    Proceedings to remove the six suspected illegal immigrants are under way.

    Suffolk official Abi Marriott was left speechless after being told she will be an assistant referee at this season’s Women’s FA Cup Final, external.

    The 25-year-old from Mildenhall will be running the line at the match between Birmingham City and Manchester City at Wembley Stadium on Saturday, 13 May.

    "It is definitely the pinnacle of my career," Marriott said. 

    "Every referee dreams of walking out at Wembley for a national final."

    Abi was encouraged to take up the whistle six years ago by her fiancé and fellow referee George Byrne.

    "When I started I had no idea I would get this far, but as I’ve progressed my achievable targets have changed."

    A busy summer is being forecast at Bury St Edmunds Rugby Club, external following the appointment of new head coach Jon Clarke (pictured).

    The former England Saxons and Northampton Saints player takes over a side which has enjoyed two seasons in National League Two South, following a series of promotions under former coach Gavin Hogg. 

    "There were a few people interested in coming here," said Bury's performance director Terry Sands. 

    "That's good news for us as it shows people know we are serious with our aspirations. 

    "I did some due diligence on Jon and he fitted the mould that we had when Gavin came here. 

    "It worked before, so why can't it work again?"

  13. Trial begins into four deaths at construction sitepublished at 15:08 British Summer Time 2 May 2017

    The trial has begun of two firms to find out if their actions played any part in the deaths of four men at a Great Yarmouth construction yard.

    Daniel Hazelton, 30, his 26-year-old brother Thomas, Adam Taylor, 28, and Peter Johnson, 42, were killed when a steel grid collapsed at a site at Claxton Engineering Services in North River Road on 21 January 2011.

    All four men were from the Stanton area of Suffolk.

    Claxton Engineering and another firm, Hazegood Construction Ltd, have pleaded not guilty to three charges brought under the Health and Safety At Work Act.

    The trial has been adjourned until tomorrow.

  14. Friends walk in funeral cortege for crash death teenagerpublished at 14:51 British Summer Time 2 May 2017

    A large group of friends walked behind the cortège at the funeral of 18-year-old Dominic O'Neill from Pulham Market - one of three friends killed in a car crash near the village a month ago.

    They were supporting Dominic's mother Davina as she arrived for the service at the village church. Dominic's friends carried his coffin into St Mary Magdalene church.

    His funeral is the last of three funerals for the trio of teenagers who lost their lives when their car left the road and crashed into a tree.

    Last Tuesday, hundreds of people gathered in Harleston for the funeral of Kyle Warren, 17. Two days later, crowds gathered in Wortham for the funeral of 16-year-old Billy Hines.

  15. Sister's plea to man last seen walking on A140published at 14:28 British Summer Time 2 May 2017

    The sister of a man who disappeared a month ago while walking on the A140 in south Norfolk has made an emotional appeal for his return.

    Nigel Kedar, from Clacton in Essex, had been visiting a friend in Norwich who'd deflated tyres on Mr Kedar's vehicle, concerned he'd had too much to drink. 

    He was last seen on 09:30 on Tuesday, 4 April, walking southbound through Dickleburgh near Diss towards Ipswich. 

    At a press conference at Norfolk Police headquarters in Wymondham today, his sister Diana Mays had this message for him.

    "Come home... you know you are loved... missed.  Anything you have done or are unhappy with, we can sort out." 

    She added that Nigel had missed his 14-year-old son's birthday, and he needed him.

    Specialist police officers, along with the National Police Air Service, are continuing their investigations into Mr Kedar's disappearance, but are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen him on or after 4 April. Any motorists who may have caught Nigel Kedar on their dashcams are also asked to come forward. 

    Nigel Kedar is described as white, 5ft 11ins (180cm) tall, of a large build with short hair. 

    He was wearing dark coloured trousers, with a lighter coloured long-sleeve shirt.

  16. Vineyard releases debut vintagepublished at 14:11 British Summer Time 2 May 2017

    A vineyard in south Norfolk is now selling its first wines.

    But the grapes have had to be brought in from Essex, while the vines at the Flint Vineyard in Earsham mature.

    Last year Ben and Hannah Witchell planted their first vines, but are yet to get the first crop. They've spent the past year developing their wine-making techniques to enable them to produce English wines of world-class quality in their winery.

    Ben, who trained in oenology - that's the science of winemaking - says they've worked with the Essex growers who produce the same grape varieties as they do, and have sourced some Bacchus and Pinot Blanc. 

    "2016 was one of the best years we've had in England for a long time," he said.

    The first official tour of the vineyard is tomorrow, when visitors will be able to taste the first wines produced at the site.

    Street artist ATM has started work on a giant hedgehog mural in Ipswich.

    The artwork is being painted at The Swan in Ipswich, a town which has been labelled as a hotspot for the mammals. 

    Suffolk Wildlife Trust has employed a dedicated hedgehog officer for the town to raise awareness of the animal's plight. 

    ATM is due to spend the next couple of days painting the mural.

    Three weeks of special events, external, including guided walks and boat trips, to showcase the Broads National Park, have begun.

    Jacquie Burgess, from the Broads Authority, says as well as walks organised by the wildlife trusts, there are events to suit a variety of interests: "You can learn how to paint in the outside, you can try getting out on a boat.

    "It's a huge range of activities for people to just give them a taste of the special things that the Broads has to offer."

    A teenager arrested on suspicion of drug driving after a serious crash near Woodbridge on Sunday night, in which a woman suffered life-threatening injuries, has been released, as police continue to investigate what happened. 

    Altogether four people were in the car which crashed into a ditch off Low Road in Hasketon just before midnight.
