    Hot and humid conditions will trigger heavy showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon in many places.

    Not all areas will get them but where they do it could lead to surface water flooding and difficult driving conditions.

    Heavy showers will ease during the evening but more are possible during the early hours near to the coast.

    Suffolk Police have begun the roll-out of body cameras for its officers - more on that as the morning progresses.

    And tributes are being paid to Ipswich headteacher Amanda Philips, who died after a fall on holiday in France.

    Leiston, external new signing Marcus Garnham says the club will be aiming to build on last season's performance and finish in the play-offs at the very least.

    The former AFC Sudbury goalkeeper is one of two new arrivals at Victory Road with striker Christy Finch returning to the Blues.

    Leiston ended the Ryman Premier Division season in seventh place, external.

    Garnham said: "The main aim is to be in the play-offs at the minimum next year and that’d be really good.

    "They did really well last year – they surprised a few people with the way they play football and things like that.

    "So that’s what they’re going for this year, to try and still entertain the fans and to push on really.”

    The boxing promoter behind Saturday's postponed card at Braintree Leisure Centre says he had no choice but to cancel.

    A combination of injuries to boxers and other problems meant some of the top fights couldn’t go ahead.

    Two Suffolk boxers, Ipswich's Fabio Wardley and Billy Bird from Sudbury (pictured), had been due to fight on the night.

    Mervyn Turner from Shamrock Boxing Promotions, external says he wasn't prepared to put on a below-par show for fans.

    “We had a fluke set of circumstances that just meant we could not provide a quality product and, if we can’t do that, I don’t want the public turning up and being short-changed," he said.

    "I won’t do it.”

  9. Leading Ipswich education figure dies after holiday fallpublished at 17:16 British Summer Time 1 June 2017

    A leading figure in two Ipswich schools has died after suffering a fall while on holiday in France.

    Amanda Phillips was the chief executive of the Paradigm Trust, external which runs Ipswich Academy, external and Murrayfield Primary School, external (pictured). She was also principal at Murrayfield.

    A notice on the website, external of both schools today says that Amanda Phillips suffered severe head injuries in a fall earlier this week and died yesterday.

    David Willis, chairman of the trust, described it as a "dreadful tragedy" and said she led the trust with "enormous energy, tremendous skill and most of all an enduring passion to give every child an outstanding education".

  11. Bail cancelled for man arrested following fatal house firepublished at 16:52 British Summer Time 1 June 2017

    A 69-year-old man from Ipswich, who was arrested on suspicion of murder following a fatal house fire at Fuchsia Lane near Derby Road railway station in March 2016, has now had his bail cancelled.

    Suffolk Police say they put together a file for consideration by the Crown Prosecution Service, who found there was insufficient evidence to proceed with a prosecution.

    John Allen, 86, died in hospital following the fire and since then police have been carrying out a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the blaze and the circumstances around the incident.

    The full findings of the investigation will be heard at an inquest into Mr Allen’s death, which will be heard in due course.

    But later this month, the multi-storey car park in Foundation Street, Ipswich, will be the venue for two concerts by the Multi-Story Orchestra, external, as part of this year's Aldeburgh Festival, external.

    The first concert will see the orchestra joined by children from Hillside, external and Sidegate, external primary schools, as well as soprano Raphaela Papadakis, external and bass-baritone Andrew Rupp for a performance of two works by Handel.

    In the second concert, the orchestra will play Mozart's Jupiter Symphony.

  13. Practice bomb discovered at RAF Honingtonpublished at 15:57 British Summer Time 1 June 2017

    A military spokesperson has confirmed that a 25lb (11kg) World War Two practice bomb was discovered at RAF Honington earlier today.

    A bomb disposal team is at the scene and the device will be detonated later today.

    No homes will need to be evacuated.

    Ipswich Witches, external boss Ritchie Hawkins will be looking for an improved performance from his team when they host Newcastle Diamonds in the Championship, external tonight.

    "We can’t dwell on Saturday's defeat at Workington and we need to put it behind us quickly," Hawkins told the club website.

    "I have heard from a few of the lads who were disappointed with their own personal performance. That is enough for me and you have to accept that and move on.

    "It will be a tough meeting because Newcastle always go well at our place and I don’t see that being any different."

    As shares go on sale to try to save the pier at Shotley, the group behind the project, external say it's attracted interest from around the world.

    Sally Chicken, chair of the Shotley Heritage Charitable Community Benefit Society, said: "We’ve had emails and calls from people in Australia - the Victoria branch of the Ganges Association have been in touch.

    "We've had people in America, Canada - all with a previous connection of some kind, mainly the Ganges.

    She explained the pier could have a variety of uses: "To board boats, we hope to have moorings off the pier.

    "Definitely going to be fishing, we're thinking about a pontoon off the pier for fishermen to sit and enjoy life taking photogrpahs, drawing pictures, the art potential down there is enormous it's so beautiful."

  17. Share issue launched to try to save Shotley Pierpublished at 14:26 British Summer Time 1 June 2017

    The group trying to buy and restore Shotley Pier is launching a share issue this afternoon, to try and raise between £80,000 and £130,000 for the project.

    The 600ft (180m) Shotley Railway Pier at Shotley Gate, was built in 1894 by the Marquis of Bristol.

    It was once used to carry mail as well as munitions and sailors to Shotley Gate's former HMS Ganges naval training base.

    Sally Chicken, chair of the Shotley Heritage Charitable Community Benefit Society, external, said: "It's been there 122 years, looking a bit sad and the community decided it was time we saved it.

    "Most piers stick out to sea and there's not much to look at, but this pier - you can almost touch the passing ships.

    "We've got six weeks during the share issue... It's definitely a community investment, not a financial investment, so people shouldn't expect to make a profit, there won't be any dividends payable but the upside is, [you could] be a part-owner of a Victorian pier."

    We have put calls in to RAF Honington and the Ministry of Defence.

    It has yet to be established when the unexploded bomb which has been found there dates from.

    Suffolk Police has said it is not involved in the investigation as the device was within the boundaries of the base.

  20. Copper water tank turned into model of Golden Hindpublished at 13:26 British Summer Time 1 June 2017

    An Ipswich man has created a replica of Sir Francis Drake's ship The Golden Hind, external, the first English vessel to sail around the world, from a copper water tank.

    Mel Oxborrow, who celebrates his 80th birthday next week, had made a wooden kit version for his next-door-neighbour and decided he needed a greater challenge.

    Since last November, he's spent most days cutting, moulding, twisting and soldering to complete the project.

    Betty, his wife of 50 years, said he hasn't got anything in the pipeline to tackle next "but I've no doubt something will come up before long".

    His daughter Suzi Macey said: "We are immensely proud of what dad has achieved.

    "We'd be thrilled if there was any way that he could be put in contact with an expert on The Golden Hind who could tell him more about the history of the ship and maybe one day he could see his replica proudly displayed in a museum somewhere."
