    It's day two of the Suffolk Show, external, where we've been told organisers had to open the overflow car park yesterday for the first time in 12 years - I wonder if they'll need to do it again today?

  4. Plans to refurbish Ipswich Cornhill welcomedpublished at 17:20 British Summer Time 31 May 2017

    The leader of Ipswich Borough Council says the Cornhill area of the town will look very different after a £3m redevelopment is finished.

    David Ellesmere, Labour, said: "It'll be completely repaved in new materials, there'll be a levelling off of the surface in the middle of the Cornhill, there'll be a water feature, improved seating and a new structure to draw people in, as well as improved lighting."

    Ipswich Sports Club has been refused permission to build an indoor swimming pool with associated changing rooms and gyms at its Henley Road site, because the development would result in the loss of a protected cedar tree, and possibly the loss of a further protected cedar tree, Ipswich Borough Council has told us.

    The club has been given the go-ahead, though, to demolish a synthetic turf hockey pitch and build 28 dwellings, along with parking spaces, and an extension over its existing changing rooms to create fitness studios.

    Planning permission has been granted for part of the Great White Horse Hotel in Ipswich, immortalised by Charles Dickens, external in the Pickwick Papers, to undergo a major transformation.

    Ipswich Borough Council planners have agreed to an application for a change of use, external of upper floors at the hotel to become a business centre with 'start-up' suites.

    Part of the first floor will be changed to a cafe/restaurant, and a four-storey courtyard block will be converted into six one-bedroom self-contained flats.

    An anti-war placard claimed to be by Banksy has sold at an auction in Newmarket for £10,000.

    Rowley's said the cardboard placard was one of dozens given to protesters opposing the Iraq War in 2003.

    However, Pest Control, which authenticates work by the illusive artist, said it was unable to confirm whether it was made by Banksy.

    Several bids were made on the placard, with the highest offer coming from an online bidder.

    An Ipswich mum has praised the sporting opportunities at the Suffolk Show, after her seven-year-old son had a go on the bike track set up by Elmy Cycles, external of Ipswich.

  15. £3m facelift for Ipswich Cornhill gets the thumbs-uppublished at 13:04 British Summer Time 31 May 2017

    Councillors in Ipswich have voted to go ahead with a major facelift for the Cornhill area of the town.

    Once repaving of the Cornhill Lloyds archway and Princes Street (north of Giles Circus) are completed, plus the addition of a water feature, public art and tree planting, the area will go from looking like this:

    Last year, the New Anglia local enterprise partnership (LEP) announced it is providing £1.6m in funding towards the scheme.

    Suffolk County Council and Ipswich Council have already committed £1.75m.

    We mentioned in our welcome this morning that a major redevelopment of the Cornhill area in Ipswich is being discussed by councillors today.

    If you don't know the area, this was the scene when I nipped out into the town centre just now.

    At the Suffolk Fire & Rescue Service stand at the Suffolk Show, external, Northgate High School pupil Marcus Lucas, 14, finds out what it takes to be a firefighter:

    Dale Willings, from Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service's training centre in Wattisham, said they have set up two confined spaces exercises as that's often the one which budding firefighters fail at.

    "If they can overcome confined spaces, we are half-way there," he said.

    Virtual reality headsets are being used at the Suffolk Show to give people a glimpse of what it's like to work on an off-shore wind farm.

    Ben Sayer, 28, from Beccles, and Maddie Burch, 26, from Wickhan Market, have been at the Scottish Power Renewables, external stand - where the company is trying to sell the benefits of working at sea.

    Miss Burch said: "I felt sea sick at one point. I was up high and then on the sea. It was really good. I've seen on shore wind turbines but never off shore ones."

    The East Anglia One windfarm project off the Suffolk coast got the go-ahead last year.

  20. Campaign launched to strengthen estuary defence wallspublished at 10:50 British Summer Time 31 May 2017

    A £12m fundraising campaign is being unveiled at the Suffolk Show, to strengthen the estuary defence walls of the Alde, Ore and Butley rivers.

    Sir Edward Greenwell is chairman of the Alde and Ore Estuary Partnership, external, which was established to facilitate charitable donations for the project.

    He said: "These walls were begun to be built in the 12th Century by the monks from the various priories and monasteries about and every generation since, people have built them up, they've looked after them.

    "It's now our turn to do our bit and so we are trying to raise the money to do it now."
