  5. General election 2017: Northern bypass for Ipswich in focuspublished at 10:45 British Summer Time 30 May 2017

The Conservative and Labour candidates in the Central Suffolk and north Ipswich constituency have been setting their stall out when it comes to the need for a northern bypass for Ipswich.

    Dan Poulter and Elizabeth Hughes

Dan Poulter (Conservative) said the majority of congestion in Ipswich is caused by journeys within the town "so the main focus should be making sure we help people to get out of their cars as much as we can".

Mr Poulter added: "I would rather see money at the moment going into our health and care system than half a billion pounds concreting over the Suffolk countryside."

Labour candidate Elizabeth Hughes began by saying: "The plans for the bypass I'm sympathetic to them, but what is the need for it? There's got to be a proven need before we start building it and there may be other priorities."

Pressed on the subject by BBC Suffolk presenter Mark Murphy, who said: "You don't think there's a proven need?", Ms Hughes replied: "There is a need for relief of some of the traffic congestion... I'm for a northern bypass... it's the actual timing of when it goes in."

There's quite a lot of cloud around but I think as the day continues we'll see some bright spells coming through, not lots and lots of sunshine but some breaks in the cloud through the day.

There may be an occasional touch of drizzle, maybe the odd light shower but nothing more than that.

Top temperature across the BBC East region 19C (66F).
