    The returning MP for West Suffolk, Conservative Matthew Hancock, has seen the number of votes he's received rise from 25,684 in 2015, to 31,649 this time.

    The Labour candidate, Michael Jefferys, has almost doubled his votes, from 8,604 in 2015 to 14,586.

    In 2015 he came third, behind the UKIP candidate Julian Flood.

    This time round, Mr Flood polled 2,396 votes, compared to 10,700 in 2015.

    An inquest is due to be held later into the death of a teenage boy fatally hit by an air gun pellet.

    Ben Wragge, 13, was injured in Thurston near Bury St Edmunds, on 1 May last year and died later that day at the West Suffolk Hospital.

    The inquest is listed to be heard at Suffolk Coroner's Court in Ipswich.

    Voting is under way in the UK general election.

    Polling stations opened at 07:00 and will close at 22:00.

    The first results are expected to come in before midnight, but the vast majority of constituencies will declare in the early hours of tomorrow morning.

    The BBC's main election TV programme, fronted by David Dimbleby, starts at 21:55 BST and there'll be live coverage overnight on BBC Radio Suffolk.

    We'll also be providing a live election updates page from all the local counts. It will appear on the BBC Suffolk news index at 22:00.

    Hello and welcome to Thursday's Suffolk Live.

    Between now and 18:00, we will bring you the news, sport, travel and weather updates as we get them.

    Security's been stepped up at polling stations for the general election in the wake of the recent terrorist attacks.

    There'll be armed police patrols in some areas.

    Voting has begun and will go on until 22:00 tonight.

    We're always interested in what's happening in your part of Suffolk.

  9. UKIP will not contest Suffolk Coastal seatpublished at 23:37 British Summer Time 7 June 2017

    UKIP says it's decided not to put up a candidate in the Suffolk Coastal constituency at next month's general election, as it's "totally clear" that the Conservative Dr Therese Coffey will be re-elected whatever happens.

    Dr Coffey has responded by saying: "It's kind of them to say that, but I don't take anything for granted."

    UKIP says voters in the constituency "should demand and expect clear reassurance from Dr Coffey that she will commit to put her full weight as an Environment Department Minister behind their interests in the Brexit process".

    The candidates for Suffolk Coastal are:

    • Dr Therese Coffey (Conservative)
    • Cameron Matthews (Labour)
    • James Sandbach (Liberal Democrats)
    • Eamonn O'Nolan (Green)
    • Philip Young (independent)

    Dr Coffey had a majority of nearly 19,000 in the 2015 general election.

    There'll be outbreaks of rain spreading north-eastwards overnight, turning heavy at times.

    Light to moderate south-westerly winds will give us lows of about 12C (54F).

    The last of any overnight rain will clear tomorrow morning to leave a largely dry day with some bright or sunny intervals.

    Some showers are possible but they won’t be for everyone.

    The winds will pick up to a moderate to fresh south-westerly leading to a top temperature of 19C (66F).

    There is just the small risk of some thunderstorms late in the day moving up from France.

    Greater Anglia has revealed a mock-up of its new look trains. The company is investing £1.4bn in an entire new fleet. Commuters travelling on the Norwich to London intercity service, the Stansted Express line and on some regional routes will have these new carriages.

    A care home in north Suffolk has been told to improve, or face possible closure, after inspectors from the Care Quality Commission, external found residents at risk of harm.

    Manor Farm Care Home, external in Kessingland, which has 23 elderly residents, has been rated "inadequate" by the CQC.

    An inspection report says people there were put at risk of significant harm due to an absence of clear records and assessments.

    They found staff shortages were to blame for many of the care home's failings and said several residents were at risk of malnutrition because they weren't being properly fed.

    We asked Manor Farm Care Home for a response but we've not heard back.

    Manager Jamie Godbold and his assistant Andy Reynolds are ready to take AFC Sudbury, external back up to the Ryman Premier Division.

    The latter has been speaking to us today about how the club is not panicking despite the loss of a few key players in recent weeks, including goalkeeper Marcus Garnham, and midfielder Robert Eagle.

    Reynolds has also told us that despite suffering relegation in April, there was no chance of him and Godbold leaving the Wardale Williams Stadium.

    "It took one meeting with the chairman and one of the directors to make it clear that the club still shares the same ambitions we do, and over the last year, the business side of the club has made huge strides forward.

    "There is not a club in our opinion locally that has the same quality of facilities and people off the pitch working tirelessly to make it the best it can possibly be.

    "If we get our shopping list this summer, or close to it, we will be as competitive as we were a couple of seasons ago."

    The Lee Valley Arena in the Olympic Park is the setting for a face off between the world's best three teams, as GB prepare to meet Argentina on Saturday and the Netherlands on Sunday.

    Martin, who made her full senior international debut earlier in the year, hopes to help Danny Kerry's side build on the success of their Olympic gold medal winning summer of 2016.

    "This weekend will be hugely exciting for everyone involved," the 22-year-old told us. "It's not often you get the teams ranked one, two and three in the world together at the same time."

    "I'm really proud to be a part of this squad. I think there has been an increase of around 10,000 people playing hockey back home since Rio. It is really exciting to see things going in such a positive direction."

    The jury at the Old Bailey in the trial of a man accused of the murder of two men following a stabbing at the West Meadows travellers' site in Ipswich, has been played a video recording of an interview given after the incident.

    In it Tammy Smith, the partner of stab victim Barry Street, told how the accused, Nelson Smith, had struck him twice with a kitchen knife as he ran away.

    She said he collapsed on to his back by the site entrance.

    She said: "I told him, 'you will be all right. We are going to get an ambulance'".

    But Mr Street told her that he couldn't breathe and said he was going to die.

    The trial continues.

    Ipswich Town’s first signing of the summer says the decision to put pen to paper on a two-year deal was “an easy decision to make”.

    Jordan Spence, who joined the Blues on a short term contract in January, featured mainly as right wing-back when manager, Mick McCarthy, switched to a 3-5-2 formation.

    The defender told Ipswich Player he was pleased that the manager showed "the level of faith in me that he did by putting me straight in more or less and sticking with me, of course that gave me a lot of confidence".

    "I had the confidence already in myself that I could perform at this level - there was no doubt about that but obviously having it from such a well established manager in the game and also the things that he's tried to impart and add to my game in that short period of time, I'm looking forward to adding onto those."
