    This Suffolk Wildlife Trust warden, based at the Sizewell Estate, thought lightning may have hit Sizewell B nuclear power station.

    However, we rang the switchboard at the EDF plant, and they said they definitely hadn't been hit today.

    A week of action to tackle drugs supply in Ipswich has seen more than 50 arrests being made, a quantity of class A drugs seized and a number of road traffic offences being dealt with.

    The operation was designed to disrupt and tackle both drugs offences, and violent and acquisitive crime linked to drugs, as many recent attacks and robberies in the town are believed to have their roots in disputes over drug supply.

    Det Supt Steve Mattin said: "Many of those arrested have been remanded in custody pending further court hearings, while others will appear at court over the next few weeks."

  8. Simon Dobbin: Jury sent home for nightpublished at 16:42 British Summer Time 10 July 2017

    The jury in the trial of 13 men charged in connection with the attack in Southend on football fan Simon Dobbin have been sent home for the night.

    The five men and seven women will return to Basildon Crown Court for 10:15 tomorrow.

    Mr Dobbin, a Cambridge United fan who lives in Milldenhall, was left with brain damage after the incident.

    One man has already admitted violent disorder, but the other 12 defendants deny that charge and all 13 deny conspiracy to commit violent disorder.

    A wheelchair-user has welcomed news that Ipswich Tennis club, external has started offering wheelchair tennis sessions.

    Natalie, who became a wheelchair user in the last couple of years, said: "I do like the social side of it, the added bonus of a drink in the bar at the end of it with a few friends is nice, but for me it was more than that.

    "It was actually psychological well-being, so I could blank out any of the hardship I'd unfortunately faced in the last 20 months in what's been an incredibly traumatic time.

    "I don't think about that when I'm on the court for two hours."

    With help from Suffolk LTA and the Tennis Foundation, the club has bought a number of sports wheelchairs, and now offers coaching twice a month.

    An album of drawings by Sudbury-born Thomas Gainsborough has been described as the "very best collection of Gainsborough's early drawings in existence".

    The drawings, in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle, had been attributed to another artist, Sir Edwin Landseer, in the reign of Queen Victoria.

    But after studying the 25 black-and-white chalk sketches, historian Lindsay Stainton confirmed they are actually early works by one of Britain's most famous painters.

    "It's thrilling," she told the BBC.

    The effectiveness of a project to alleviate the risk of flooding in parts of Lowestoft is being assessed today by members of the Suffolk Flood Risk Management Scrutiny Committee.

    Anglian Water says it's spent £2m in the All Saints' Road area "building bigger pipes, bigger surface water sewers and bigger foul sewers".

    Emma Staples from the company added: "In Kirkley Stream we've also done a lot of work around the trash screens - they're in place to stop debris getting into our pumping station.

    "We've also attached a sensor to the screens so we'll now see if the river level is rising.

    "We'll be able to send people out before the storm gets serious."

    Two years after 33 homes were flooded in Lowestoft, parts of the town are still at risk of significant flooding from the sea, rivers, and extreme rainfall, according to a report being discussed, external by Suffolk's Flood Risk Management Scrutiny Committee, external today.

    In July 2015, 82mm (3in) of rain fell in just one night, affecting homes close to the Kirkley Stream in south Lowestoft.

    Last week exceptionally heavy rain caused a stream to overflow, caused by people dumping rubbish in it, according to local residents.

    They also said they "kept watching out the window" and the water levels rose "halfway up the garden".

    One recommendation in the report is to have volunteer flood wardens to monitor the Kirkley Stream and report blockages, but people living in the area aren't in favour of this.

    "They should have somebody appointed to come round here and look after the stream and when we get a flood warning there should be somebody round here checking," one of them said.

    "It's their responsibility, they should look after it, not us."

    Ipswich Harriers, external javelin thrower Don Baker came second at the English Schools Athletics Championship, external in Birmingham on Saturday.

    The 17-year-old from Bentley threw 59.36 metres in the senior boys' event, to finish behind Norfolk's Daniel Bainbridge.

    Baker's been selected to represent England at the Commonwealth Youth Games, external later this month.

    Police in Ipswich say "not a day goes by in the town" when they don't have a couple of bicycles stolen, describing it as a "significant issue".

    An appeal on the Suffolk Police Facebook page, external to find the owners of six bikes recovered from a property in Ipswich has been shared more than 325 times, and they've received 100 emails from people who've had bikes stolen.
