The judge at Basildon Crown Court has handed down sentences to 12 of the 13 men convicted of offences in the case of Simon Dobbin.

Mr Dobbin, a Cambridge United fan who lives in Mildenhall, was left brain-damaged after being attacked after attending the game at Southend United in March 2015.

Three of the men were jailed for five years - the maximum possible sentence for the offence of committing violent disorder - with sentences of varying lengths for the others.

The shortest sentence - 16 months - was given to Rhys Pullen, who admitted the charge of violent disorder earlier in proceedings.

A thirteenth man, Ian Young, who was found guilty of assisting offenders by hiding them, is due to be sentenced on 2 August.

Suffolk Police are taking part in the national Sceptre, external campaign highlighting the risks of carrying knives.

The force says a previous crackdown in May saw more than 137 offences involving knives or bladed weapons, averaging more than two per day.

Acting Supt Simon Mills says excluded children can often find themselves more deeply involved in crime:

"We fully understand the reasons behind that. We're trying to work with the education department to say, actually, is excluding the children the right thing because what that's doing is pushing the children towards the drug dealers and some of the gangs?

"We're really, really encouraging schools not to exclude them unless it's absolutely necessary."

His wife Nicole told the court he's been left with a "life sentence", and that she "hates what these violent thugs have done to us".

The 13 defendants were convicted of various offences on Friday including violent disorder, conspiracy to commit violent disorder or assisting an offendor.

She and her daughter Emily (pictured above) have called for a change in the law, asking how someone who was clinically dead for seven minutes before being saved by paramedics results in 13 men being convicted of violent disorder and not murder or attempted murder.

  10. Hurt man rescued from rollercoaster ridepublished at 11:26 British Summer Time 17 July 2017

A man had to be rescued by firefighters after a rollercoaster became stuck "in a very high position" on its tracks.

The man, who was suffering from back pain, was on the Wipeout ride at Pleasurewood Hills near Lowestoft.

Firefighters had to use a cherry picker to reach him on Sunday afternoon.

Group Commander Ali Moseley, from Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service, said by the time fire crews had arrived, park staff had managed to get the rollercoaster car down to an elevated platform after it seemed to get stuck in a very high position.

"The site staff kicked in and they lowered the car to a place where emergency services could get better access - but still very difficult access because we had to get our equipment ready assuming we'd have to cut the individual out of the car to make it safe to rescue him on a stretcher."

A spokeswoman for Pleasurewood Hills said it was "a minor incident that was dealt with by [our] team".

  12. 'Neighbourliness is a beautiful thing' say Mumford & Sonspublished at 11:03 British Summer Time 17 July 2017

    Paul Glynn
    Music News LIVE reporter

Mumford and SonsImage source, Matt Eachus

The 1975 performed their first ever festival headline set at Latitude on Friday night and Fleet Foxes - up against DJ Fatboy Slim - played their first UK gig in five years on Sunday but Saturday was all about Mumford and Sons as their Gentlemen of the Road show rolled into Suffolk.

The band took over the festival for the evening by getting on the phone and inviting a star-studded cast of musical friends to perform, including Baaba Maal, Leon Bridges, Lucy Rose, Two Door Cinema Club and Maggie Rogers - with whom the Mumfords are apparently "obsessed".

Singer Marcus Mumford, talking to the BBC before the show, said the Gentlemen of the Road 'stopovers' - which have taken place in "towns where people don't usually tour" across America, Australia, South Africa and the UK - are all about "neighbourliness".

"We've never needed it more," he added.

"The idea of congregation is a very beautiful and ancient one. The relational magic that can happen in a field in front of a sound system with people who are all there for a similar purpose is a beautiful thing.

"You hear cool stories of people meeting for the first time or re-connecting with old friends. There often comes a time in our set when we say 'why not turn to someone you don't know and say hello!'

    Marcus MumfordImage source, Ben Gibson
    Quote Message

The idea of neighbourliness is a beautiful thing too and we've never needed it more - so the more of that the better.

"Gentlemen of the Road is all about Collaboration, so this is the ultimate collaboration with Latitude."

True to his word, their set on Saturday ended with the aforementioned Maal, Bridges, Rogers, Rose and more joining them on stage to sing a rousing rendition of The Beatles With a Little Help From My Friends - evoking images of Joe Cocker, external at one of the original and iconic neighbourly festivals Woodstock.

We'll bring you more from another Gentleman of the Road Baaba Maal later.

    Mumford & SonsImage source, Latitude

Melvin Benn, MD of Festival Republic who run the festival, which welcomed 40,000 people to Henham Park this year, said: Latitude 2017 has been one of the best, and most certainly the biggest Latitude yet.

"Yet again, I’m blown away by our Latitude audience, who were treated to the finest in music, arts, theatre, comedy and literature. I can’t wait to see you all again next year.”

From the Pyramid stage in Glastonbury to sitting around a campfire, Ed Sheeran will sing just about anywhere.

It's the latter location which has just everyone talking this morning as he has appeared as a soldier in Game of Thrones.

He sings a little ditty about a woman's hands being warm (not quite as creepy as it sounds), in Dragonstone, the first episode of the show's seventh series.

When one of GoT's main characters Arya Stark rides past, she tells him: "It's a pretty song, I've never heard it before."

"It's a new one," Sheeran replies in his best acting voice.

"Sing Galway Girl, then," she answers. "Cool," he fires back*

*OK this part didn't actually happen.
