"He's a real handful," Connolly told BBC Suffolk Sport. "I've played against him before for the under-23s and his feet are very sharp.

By here, we mean via a video screen.

    Sorry. He's in Miami...

"We've been very lucky to have eleven of tonight's nominees here," said Lauren gamely.

"He was called a 'master of the modern pop song' by the judging panel.

"His album Divide sold 1m copies per week on its first six weeks and topped the UK chart for 16 weeks."

Over to a recorded message by Ed, who said: "It was one of things where it was always a goal of mine, to play Shepherds Bush Empire and get a Mercury nomination.

"It didn't happen on the first or second albums and I didn't expect it to happen on the third.

"Congrats to whoever the winner is."

Doubt it - he's not coming.

Sorry to be the bearers off bad news.

Normally all 12 nominated acts would perform but tonight you'll have to settle for 11 as Edward's in the middle of his US tour.

Here he is below showing everyone how to use a loop pedal while performing his love letter to Ireland; Galway Girl, from his nominated album Divide, on Jools Holland.

The album practically broke the charts and spent a whopping 17 weeks at number one. It's slipped down to a lowly #2 at present.

This year's Sunday Glasto headliner is probably the man least in need of a win tonight and the bookies have him down as the rank outsider.

An already commercially successful act rarely wins this award but stranger things have happened.

  11. Weather: Sun and showers aheadpublished at 17:55 British Summer Time 14 September 2017

    Alex Dolan
    BBC Look East weather

Rather cloudy with scattered showers across the BBC East region this evening, with the rumble of thunder possible across Norfolk.

Showers dying away after midnight for most, with clear spells later as the temperature dips to 6C (43F), although places like Santon Downham in Suffolk and Writtle in Essex could be lower.

Friday will see a mainly dry start, but thickening cloud will bring outbreaks of rain, and then a mixture of sunshine and scattered heavy showers later.

The temperature will peak at about 14C (57F).

  12. More money for Suffolk's schoolspublished at 17:44 British Summer Time 14 September 2017

    Andrew Sinclair
    BBC Look East political correspondent

The government has announced extra funding for schools in Suffolk.

The figures have only just been released, but it looks as if ministers will be giving an extra £20m to schools in the county over the next two years - an increase of 4.5%

The announcement came as part of a new funding formula which sees an increase in the amount paid per pupil and an additional grant for rural schools.

The extra money follows an intensive campaign by teaching unions which saw many schools taking the unprecedented step of writing to parents to ask them to raise the issue with their MP.

The issue also featured heavily in the general election.

MPs from Suffolk have been particularly active in the debate and were meeting the education minister only yesterday.

They've always believed that, as a rural county, Suffolk lost out to urban areas under the old funding formula.

Schools have cut bus services, reduced courses and shed teaching support staff because of the growing pressure on their finances.

This extra money will help, but critics say that it barely covers the cost of inflation and they will fear that schools will continue to struggle.

  14. Wildlife Trust appeal reaches halfway point two weeks after its launchpublished at 17:33 British Summer Time 14 September 2017

An appeal by Suffolk Wildlife Trust to raise £200,000 towards the cost of buying new land to extend an existing nature reserve has reached the halfway point in two weeks.

The Trust wants to expand the Lackford Lakes reserve, external, near Bury St Edmunds, to help safeguard an area where the rare stone curlew has been found.

The wetland edge of the new land, alongside the River Lark, also provides an important habitat for nightingales.

The 77 acres of land, neighbouring Lackford village, adjoins similar fields which were purchased by the Trust in 2005.

Linking them together will create a significantly bigger area for specialist species in The Brecks to flourish.

  17. Versatility key for Connolly at Ipswichpublished at 15:24 British Summer Time 14 September 2017

    Graeme Mac
    BBC Radio Suffolk sport

Ahead of a potential home debut for Ipswich Town this weekend, Callum Connolly says he has no preference as to what position he plays in.

    Callum Connolly

The 19-year-old, who is on loan from Everton, has been backed by former Blues manager Joe Royle to feature anywhere across the defence and in midfield.

While Connolly's versatility could be an asset, the teenager also feels that spending a full campaign at Portman Road will aid his development.

"Getting in somewhere at the start of a season is a lot better than just joining for a month or a few months from January," he told us.

"At the minute I am happy to play anywhere and I wouldn't say I have got a best position, I just feel I can put a good shift in wherever I play.

"That's one of my biggest assets I feel."
