  6. Want to adopt an industrial chimney stack?published at 15:49 British Summer Time 24 May 2018

I once adopted a panda bear from a well-known worldwide wildlife charity, and I've toyed with the idea of a fruit bat from the local wildlife park, but I've never thought about adopting a 183ft (56m) Victorian chimney stack.

    Would you like one?

You can't take it home, but you won't need to as the chimney, on the Cambridge Museum of Technology, external, can be seen from most parts of the city, so you can look lovingly at your 1894 former pumping station stack in Cheddars Lane on a daily basis.

It's one of a number of items you can "adopt" to help raise funds as the museum undergoes a £2m refurbishment, backed by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Most items are up for part-ownership, so you could have half a steam engine that used to pump sewage from the city for £250, a fire pump from an old flour mill for £50, Victorian horse tramway rails which were used in the city between 1880 and 1914... or the chimney at £250.

One man's bought half the chimney, though. We're not sure which half, but whatever you adopt you'll receive a certificate, digital postcards of your item and regular updates on any conservation work it is undergoing.

The museum closed for refurbishment at the end of December and is expected to reopen in the spring of 2019.

  17. Oh deer... if you're not on the list, you're not coming inpublished at 11:40 British Summer Time 24 May 2018

    Helen Burchell
    BBC News

This little fella just wanted to carry on with his education, but was cruelly thwarted on several fronts when he tried to get into the exam hall at a Peterborough school.

The muntjac deer showed up at the door of The King's (The Cathedral) School hoping to join pupils sitting exams that day, but was turned away, as the school confirmed on Twitter, external: "This candidate was not registered for this morning's exam."

Muntjac deer at school doorImage source, King's School, Peterborough

Replying to a tongue-in-cheek accusation of discrimination against deer, the school's exams office justified banning the animal from the hall on several grounds:

    • No photographic ID
    • No black pen
    • Still had his mobile phone *and* a water bottle with a label on
    • No opposable thumb to hold any of the above
    • And finally... "meh"

We've weighed up these reasons carefully and come to the conclusion the lack of an opposable thumb probably swings it in favour of the school's decision, but are also impressed by "meh".

"Meh" aside, staff are still a little confused by the presence of the deer as the premises are just five minutes' from the busy city centre and they have no idea how this determined chap ended up at their door.
