1. It was an itsy-witsy, teeny-weeny pilfered polka-dot bikini...published at 14:22 British Summer Time 23 May 2018

Police are hoping to "spot" a pair of thieves who stole polka dot bikinis from a store in Colchester.

Essex Police says two women took the swimwear from Chocodolly in Sir Isaac's Walk in the town last month, and is now appealing for witnesses.

If you spot two bikini-clad ladies wandering around the town, you're encouraged to call 101.

Don't just stare, call the non-emergency police number because not only are they likely to be very cold, but they might also be the swimwear-swipers.

The Ferrari driver was caught speeding on a 70mph (112km/h) stretch of the A11 at Wymondham at about 15:10 on Tuesday.

"Ferrari or not, the speed limit is 70mph," one officer wrote on Twitter.

Another added: "Roads are not a race track despite what car you have."

  12. No 'affordable' housing in 200-home development in Chelmsfordpublished at 18:26 British Summer Time 22 May 2018

    Piers Meyler, Local Democracy Reporter

Plans for more than 200 homes on the site of a former Royal Mail depot in Chelmsford will not have any so-called affordable housing, developers have revealed.

Bellway's plans for the derelict site near Chelmsford Railway Station include 203 flats across nine blocks built between three and five stories high.

None of them will have homes defined as "affordable", even though more than 100 new properties built by Bellway on the old Marconi site nearby provided for shared ownership and affordable rent.

A statement from Chelmsford City Council said: "The viability assessment concludes that the provision of affordable housing would render the scheme financially unviable."

  14. Are you ready for 42 miles of new roadworks?published at 18:16 British Summer Time 22 May 2018

A £5m scheme to resurface 42 miles (67km) of roads across Cambridgeshire is expected to start next week.

The work on 43 separate sections of road is expected to last throughout June. Motorists are being advised to expect closures and disruption throughout that period.

However, to make sure it can get done as quickly as possible, the team from the county council has acquired a brand new bit of kit with the not-so-catchy name of the "Etnyre".

This vehicle is wide enough to surface the entire width of a road in one go and is the only one of its kind in the country, a spokesman says.

Advance warning signs and letters are going to be delivered to residents and businesses which could be affected by the various closures, and further details are available on the council's website, external.

  15. Pensioner died after 'accidentally igniting clothes'published at 16:47 British Summer Time 22 May 2018

    John NolanImage source, Met Police

A pensioner who died after being found in flames on a street in Tottenham, accidentally ignited his clothing while lighting a cigarette, a coroner has concluded.

John Nolan's death was the subject of a police appeal for witnesses while they were unable to explain the incident.

But, coroner Andrew Walker concluded that the retired construction worker, 70, died as a result of "accidental ignition of clothing".

"It's likely that Mr Nolan accidentally set his clothes on fire whilst lighting a cigarette," Mr Walker told North London Coroner's Court.

Mr Nolan, who was found with a pack of cigarettes and two lighters, suffered "severe" burns on 65% of his body after being on fire for about six minutes.

The coroner agreed with the police's ultimate conclusion that Mr Nolan did not ignite himself deliberately, that there was no-one else involved and that a flammable liquid did not help the fire.

Instead it was a "really tragic accident" aided by his lack of mobility, he said.

Mr Nolan took a stroll alone on 17 September, having been with his carer brother Jimmy.

They planned to follow the All-Ireland Football final but at about 1pm, the Met Police were called to reports of a fire near Williams House in Orchard Place.

Passers-by tried to extinguish the flames and Mr Nolan was airlifted to Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, where he died the following day.
