Brighton Hove and Sussex Sixth Form College (BHASVIC) say they are “hugely disappointed and frustrated” after grades submitted were “suppressed” during the exam board standardisation process.

Principal William Baldwin says his college submitted a set of Centre Assessed Grades in line with previous year outcomes within a “tightly controlled” system.

However, some students have been left with disappointing grades as a result.

Mr Baldwin said: “Today was always going to be an unusual results day, but it has turned out to be more unusual than expected both in the build-up and in the outcomes.

“I was hopeful that the Centre Assessed Grades that we provided to exam boards would be largely accepted by them. Unfortunately, this has not been the case.”

He added: “The exam board standardisation process has suppressed a number of final grades against those we submitted on a range of courses (as well as against last year’s outcomes and our three-year average).

“We are hugely disappointed and frustrated that this has happened to some of our students – it doesn’t seem fair or right – particularly against the political rhetoric of ‘no individual will suffer as a result of the cancellation of exams’.”

Mr Baldwin added that he intends to appeal the grades handed to pupils when the picture becomes clearer on the appeals process.
