The Brighton Marathon weekend, which was postponed in March and was due to take place between 18 and 20 September, will now not go ahead as planned, organisers say.

In a statement, marathon organisers said: "Not hosting the Brighton Marathon Weekend this September is not a decision that we have taken lightly."

They added that managing social distancing crowds would be "extremely difficult".

Although they are unable to shut down large parts of the city for the usual 26.2 mile course, organisers said they were working instead on creating a "socially-distanced, Covid-19 compliant event, which our 2020 participants will be invited to be part of" this autumn.

Further details of the revised event and options for registered runners will be released by mid-August.

Green councillor Sarah Nield called for more promotion of reusable face coverings to try to discourage people from discarding masks.

She told Brighton and Hove City Council’s Health and Well-being Board: “It is quite easy to buy one you can wash.

“This is going to go on for a long time and I dread to think about the amount of PPE going into the bin.”

Labour councillor Nick Childs said many people had raised the subject of the “proliferation of face masks chucked on the floor”.

He said: “It’s something all of us have seen more and more, and I think it’s going to increase as mask wearing becomes obligatory."

Job losses are being proposed at a theatres and events department run by a seaside council which is facing a £9.9m deficit caused by the fallout of Covid-19.

Officials at the authority said the government had "not fulfilled its commitment to meet our increased costs" and loss of income that resulted from the pandemic.

The council said: “Nowhere in the council has the lockdown been felt more acutely than in our theatres and events department. Most regrettably, this will mean a reduction in the numbers of staff in these areas.

“The first step in this process is a consultation with staff on new structures within the organisation and job roles.

"This review is no way a reflection of the quality of our staff, who have all been excellent and we regret having to put them through this process.”

The council runs several theatres in the resort, including the Congress Theatre.

  14. Leisure centre plans suspendedpublished at 14:46 British Summer Time 28 July 2020

    Local Democracy Reporter

A project to build a new leisure centre in East Sussex has been formally suspended, following a meeting of senior councillors.

Rother District Council’s cabinet agreed to formally suspend plans to replace Bexhill Leisure Centre with a larger, more modern facility and instead pursue a more modest refurbishment of the current building.

The leisure centre project, which had been expected to cost as much as £15m, had formed part of the wider redevelopment of the former Bexhill High School site in Down Road.

Before the vote, the council’s lead member for health, wellbeing and inclusion Jay Brewerton said: “I was extremely disappointed to have to be in the situation where we are deferring the actual building of a new leisure centre. I hope that we can achieve this within our time [in council].

“I’m very much for still building a new leisure centre, but I appreciate that while we are in the middle of a pandemic we cannot be seen to be spending extortionate amounts or even borrowing extortionate amounts to build."

While the leisure centre redevelopment was put on hold, cabinet confirmed the wider housing development scheme will continue, eventually leading to a reserved matters planning application.

As part of this, cabinet agreed that land acquisitions and Compulsory Purchase Orders (CPOs) “be progressed where necessary”.

It is one of only a handful of times in its 167-year history that it has not taken part. The others were during the First and Second World Wars, the 1960 Lewes Flood and the typhoid outbreak in the town in 1874.

The East Sussex town is famous for burning effigies of controversial politicians and celebrities every year on Bonfire Night.

Effigies created by the seven bonfire societies that make up Lewes Bonfire Council are paraded along the narrow streets before being burned in front of thousands of onlookers.

The other six societies have not made any announcements about cancelling 2020 festivities.

A spokesman for Cliffe Bonfire Society said: "It is with a heavy heart that the committee of Cliffe Bonfire Ltd, trading as Cliffe Bonfire Society, and the directors of Brightnight Ltd formally announce that our celebration of the deliverance of King James I and Parliament from the Gunpowder Plot in 1605 and its associated protection of our democracy on November 5th 2020 is cancelled.

"As before, this decision has been taken primarily to protect our members' and community's safety, but also to ensure that we do not burden our emergency services when their presence may be needed elsewhere."
