    Large numbers of trees have fallen on to the roads causing delays for motorists in the South East due to Storm Eleanor.

    This tree fell in Collingwood Close in Peacehaven last night.

    Kent Police said they had a "busy night" clearing up the trees which saw one obstructing the A20 road in Offham.

    Another tree fell onto the M25 clockwise between Junction 17 and Junction 18 last night during the storm, resulting in two lanes having to be closed.

    The east tunnel of the Dartford Crossing remained closed for part of the morning but has since reopened.

    Ferries from Dover are also facing delays.

    An author from Kent has been announced as the winner of the Costa Children's Book Award.

    Katherine Rundell's The Explorer was selected from hundreds of entries.

    A panel of judges described the book as "a glorious read and a timeless voyage of wonder that will be enjoyed by readers aged 8 to 80".

    The 30-year-old novelist, who was born in Pembury, is now in the running for the Costa Book of the Year.

    A Maidstone man got to meet legendary music producer and Chic front man Nile Rodgers at a New Year's Eve concert following a case of mistaken identity.

    David Furness tweeted the pop star, who was performing at the BBC's televised celebrations in London, and got a very familiar response.

    Mr Furness said: "I was quite surprised to get a retweet from him, but realised pretty quickly that he’d mistaken me for David Furnish.

    "It’s not the first time people have got the names mixed up."

    After a good natured exchange David was invited to attend the concert and even got to meet the confused star.

    Mr Furness continued: "We had a good laugh about the mix up. He wasn’t embarrassed at all and he thought his mistake was really funny."

    Justin Bartholomew from Newhaven had been depressed before he died.

    His relatives believe the drinks contributed to his mental state.

    Car parking charges at train stations across Sussex, Kent, and parts of Surrey are going up.

    Southern is increasing daily and weekly charges at its 140 stations by "an average of 4 to 5 per cent" but said it had frozen parking charges since 2015.

    Southeastern said it had put up parking charges at many of its stations.

    It has also introduced charging for car parking at five stations which used to be free, including Sandwich.

    It will now cost £4 per day, or £755.20 per year, to park there.

    From today commuters in the South East are paying the highest rail fare increases in five years. Ticket prices have risen by an average of 3.4 per cent.

    The rail industry insists a large percentage of its revenue goes towards improving and running the railway.

    An amateur bodybuilder has been filmed selling steroids from his living room.

    An investigation by BBC South East said there are scores of companies selling the performance-enhancing drugs online.

    The bodybuilder who was filmed, Dariusz Kalisztan, said he had only ever sold the drugs to the BBC reporter.

    Two police cars have been damaged after being hit by rocks in Ashford.

    Between midday and 14:00 GMT on 30 December, three parked cars – two of which were Kent Police vehicles - were damaged when rocks were thrown into the rear of Ashford Police Station in Tufton Street.

    Insp Jason Atkinson said: "It is fortunate no-one was in the cars at the time the rocks were thrown, or there could have easily been serious injuries."

    Police have appealed for witnesses.

    A plan to create a "continental-style" boulevard and improve access to Worthing town centre has been unveiled.

    The proposals also include pedestrianising some areas and improving connections from the railway station to the seafront.

    The six key redevelopment sites in the town are Teville Gate, Union Place, Grafton, Stagecoach, Aquarena, and the civic area.

    The growth deal has been agreed by West Sussex County Council and Worthing Borough Council and sets out plans for regeneration in residential, commercial, leisure and retail space over the next five years.
