  3. Road reopens after gritter slide

    Gritter crews have been working throughout the day in County Durham, and the council said that following a break in the snow it has managed to clear many priority one routes.

    However, with further snow and ice forecast drivers are being advised to travel only if necesary.

    The A68 between Tow Law and Castleside has now reopened after a gritter which had slid off the road was successfully removed, however a number of smaller routes in the area remain closed.

  5. School maintains record thanks to parent with a digger

    The community has helped a tiny rural school in County Durham stay open despite the snowy conditions.

    Wearhead School is more than 330m (1,100ft) above sea level and has only closed once in the last 13 years due to the weather.

    A parent with a digger helped clear the way this morning to ensure it kept up its record.

    Head teacher Karen Evans said: “Two teachers walked, one drove and two managed to get the bus down from Stanhope at the top of the dale, and one of our kind parents who has his own digger dug out our drive, entrance and yard.

    “We said to parents if they could and were happy to make it to and from us, that it was safe to do so, and that they wouldn’t put themselves or children at risk, that we were open.

    “Five children from the village walked, one came by car from St John’s Chapel and one from Westgate.”

  13. Lorry goes down embankment after A1 collision

    A lorry has gone down an embankment after being involved in a collision on the A1 and the road will be closed into the rush hour.

    The crash involving three lorries happened on near the A1167 and the B1340 near Alnwick and the road has been closed both ways.

    Diversions have been set up.

    More than 230 premises are without power in the Westpark area of South Shields, according to Northern Powergrid.

    Electricity is not expected to be restored until 21:00, the company's website says.
