    Saltwell Park in Gateshead has closed.

    A council statrement says: "Our park staff are needed elsewhere to insure our priority roads remain gritted.

    "We're very sorry; we know that today is the perfect time to visit the park, however we need to ensure the safety of all visitors, particularly unsupervised children as the lake is frozen and there are several hidden areas.

    "As there are no staff on site this is a particular concern for us, we will re-open the park as soon as we can."

    Bus firm Go North East says it's reviewing the weather situation every two hours

    Kevin Carr, managing director, said: “We are running as many services as we possibly can, but due to the severe weather conditions some routes are affected and not running to timetable.

    "To maintain services, we are sticking to main roads and are asking passengers to walk to main roads to catch the bus.

    "Anyone travelling today can keep up to date on our latest developments by visiting our Facebook and Twitter channels.”

    The company has vowed to give customers as much notice as possible if it decides to curtail services later.

    Buses operated by Stagecoach are running around the North East but there are delays and routes being changed, the company says.

    North East managing director Steve Walker said: "I can confirm that our depots in Newcastle, Sunderland, South Shields, Stockton and Hartlepool are all operating services, but these are subject to significant delays and route changes.

    "Residents in isolated housing estates are advised to use main road bus stops wherever possible."

    The A192 between the junctions for the B1326 and the A1061 in Northumberland has been reopened aftre it was closed for gritting earlier.

    Northumberland Police say traffic is flowing a lot more freely in the area now but they are asking drivers to continue to drive with care.

    A County Durham couple were assured of a very white wedding when they got married at Shotley Bridge today thanks to the community rallying around.

    Staff at St Cuthbert's Church in Benfieldside put out an appeal on Facebook for volunteers to help clear the steep road to the church so that Rebecca and Daniel's wedding could go ahead.

    Mark Charlton from Turf Care Specialists in Leadgate was one of the ones who responded, and took his digger to the church this morning.

    A car was hit when a lamp post was blown down in the wind in Whitley Bay, police said.

    Northumbria Police said no one was injured when it hit the passenger side of the car.

    Press Association photographer Owen Humphreys was at the scene.

    He said: "I have been out in a lot of severe weather and this is some of the worst I have seen.

    "There's been blizzards, thunder, lightning and now wind blowing down lamp posts. The wind really is driving in off the North Sea."

    North Tyneside Council said the lighting providers SSE will switch off the electricity and remove the four fallen lamp posts

    One lane of the A68 between Tow Law and Castleside is now open and passable with extreme caution, Durham Police say.

    The A1 northbound between junctions 61 and 62 is now open.

    The A66 remains closed until further notice.
