    If you live in the Durham area and need to empty your bin after a missed collection, Annfield Plain household waste recycling centre (HWRC) has now reopened.

    Middleton Teesdale HWRC will however remain closed today due to the weather conditions.

    A number of road closures are still in place in the Tyne & Wear and Northumberland areas.

    These include:

    • A1: From Denwick to the Scottish Borders.
    • A68: From Corbridge (A69 interchange) northbound.
    • A696: From Ponteland northbound. The road is still closed with local access as far Kirkwhelpington.
    • Fellside Road, Whickam to Broadway, Burnopfield.
    • Hylton Lane West Boldon to Kingsway Road to Addison Road.

    Electrical contractor Retroflo has offered to use its redundant 4x4s to drive doctors and nurses to work instead.

    A message on its Facebook page, external reads: "To all doctors, nurses and support staff of vulnerable people in the East Durham and Sunderland area, if you are stuck at home and can't travel due to the weather then call us.

    "We believe you people do a great job keeping our country mobile and healthy so it's our turn to give back."

    A Virgin trains spokeswoman said: “On our east coast route, due to extreme weather conditions we are advising customers not to travel today.

    "We are unable to run any services north of Newcastle.

    "For customers who would prefer to postpone their travel, tickets will be also valid for your journey on any Virgin Trains East Coast service between Saturday 3 March and Wednesday 7 March inclusive. A full refund will be available to those who choose not to travel."

    Any type of bus ticket will be accepted on Arriva services, the company has announced.

    This means that Go North East and Stagecoach tickets will be valid on Arriva buses, due to weather conditions.

    In a statement, Arriva explains: "If the first bus is an Arriva service and you don’t have a ticket with us, but have a valid bus ticket for another operator, jump on-board and get out of the cold."

    The offer will be in place until Sunday evening.
