The Labour MP for Stockton South, Dr Paul Williams, made the comment after it emerged that up to 270 women in England may have died because they did not receive invitations to routine breast cancer screening.

The Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt has told the Commons that 450,000 women - aged around 70 - had failed to get invitations since 2009, because of an IT error.

Speaking in the Commons, Dr Williams suggested the problem could have been spotted sooner, he said:

"Could I ask the secretary of state whether the uptake of screening in 68 - 71 year olds during this period was any less than expected, and if it was less than expected why wasn't this properly analysed?"

Mr Hunt said he would look into the matter.

"I think the thing that makes a difference this time is that we know we are a minority administration."

Councillor Bob Norton added supported, he said that it was a long time coming:

"For too long developers had been able to appeal a decision to reject an application and get the go-ahead."
