    The Metro Radio Arena is stepping up its event security by introducing new walk through metal detectors.

    It's hoped they'll increase the speed of entry.

    Teams are installing them this week ahead of Katy Perry's concert next Monday.

    Vehicle and ticket checks will also be carried out upon arrival and the arena will continue to operate a no bag policy.

    A man has pleaded guilty to the murder of a woman, who was registered blind, whose body was found in a property in North Shields on Christmas Day.

    Jillian Grant, 38, was found dead at a property on Tennyson Terrace.

    Mark Smith, of Tennyson Terrace, pleaded guilty to murder when he appeared at Newcastle Crown Court this morning.

    Ms Grant was described by her family as "friendly, loving and full of life" and has having "an independent spirit".

    A man has pleaded guilty to murdering a blind woman in North Shields last Christmas.

    Jillian Grant's body was found on Christmas Day in a flat on Tennyson Terrace.

    Mark Smith, who's 41, changed his plea to guilty after a jury was sworn in yesterday.

    He'd previously confessed to the attempted murder of two other people.

  7. Police investigating two rapes in Ashingtonpublished at 10:57 British Summer Time 19 June 2018

    An investigation has been launched after a woman says she was raped by two different men in Ashington.

    The first attack happened in a wooded area off Black Close Bank between 12:00 and 12:30 on Saturday 19 May.

    The suspect is described as a white male in his 50s, of medium build with short grey hair, he was wearing a polo shirt with checked shorts, and is believed to have driven away in a dark-coloured car.

    Minutes later a second man is reported to have attacked the woman before leaving on foot.

    The second suspect is described as a white male in his 40s of large build with short hair.

    He was wearing a dark jacket, blue jeans and carrying a hessian bag.

    Northumbria Police have increased patrols and are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

    The Middlesbrough MP Andy McDonald has written to the Home Secretary urging him to allow legal prescriptions of cannabis oil for medical purposes.

    He lost a son to epilepsy in 2006 and said he was speaking out in the hope that further deaths can be avoided and families are spared the pain of losing a child.

    The Labour MP has called on the government to allow a blanket exemption on the use of cannabis oil to alleviate the illness.

    Mr McDonald's son Freddie, 23, also has epilepsy and needs 24-hour care.

    The Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt says he hopes that a review of the law on the medicinal use of cannabis oil will be completed within months.

    Councillors will vote next week about whether to introduce fortnightly bin collections in North Tyneside.

    It's one of the few remaining authorities which currently collect refuse weekly.

    More than 75% of councils across England collect rubbish on a two week cycle, including those in Gateshead, Newcastle and Northumberland.

    A report to councillors says that recycling rates increase in council areas which move to less frequent collections.

    Recycling costs £12.81 per tonne, whereas disposing waste is £122 per tonne.

    If approved by councillors, the scheme will be introduced from August and calendars will be sent out to residents in July.

    The excavation of a former allotment site is continuing in the hunt for a girl who disappeared 20 years ago.

    Donna Keogh was 17 when she went missing after a party in Gresham.

    Cleveland Police launched a murder investigation but her body has never been found.

    The excavation is taking place at a patch of waste ground near Troon Close in Middlesbrough.

    Passengers on Northern Rail services are being advised to plan their journeys carefully as a fresh strike is held in the long-running dispute over guards on trains.

    Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union are staging a 24-hour stoppage, with further walkouts planned for Thursday and Saturday.

    The company said it would run as many services as possible between 07:00 and 19:00.

    The union claims imposing driver-only services is a risk to public safety.
