New plans have emerged to build an apartment complex in Newcastle's Ouseburn.

The proposals, which developers say could be worth £7m to the city's economy, have been revealed for a new 20-apartment block on land currently used as a car park.

Jenkins Homes is awaiting approval from Newcastle City Council for the plans, which would see the five-storey residential building go up in St Lawrence Road near to the Free Trade Inn.

In a statement submitted to the council, the developer said: "At the present time, the application site does not make any meaningful contribution to economic growth.

"The site is a long-term vacant employment site, with limited likelihood of being reused for employment uses in the foreseeable future."

In April, plans were unveiled for an 18-bedroom aparthotel on the site of a nearby derelict industrial storage unit, next to The Tyne Bar.

Thousands of people signed a petition against that proposal – which is yet to be determined by council bosses – amid fears that it would generate noise complaints from guests because of its proximity to the area’s live music scene.
