The eastbound carriageway of the A1231 between the Mill House roundabout and the A182 will remain closed today.
The road had to be closed after a major spill of a non hazardous by-product of the leather tanning process along a half mile stretch of the carriageway yesterday morning.
Motorists are advised to follow diversions while clean-up work is ongoing.
A boy was seriously injured when he was hit by a bus in Gateshead.
The 12-year-old remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital following the crash on Prince Consort Road on Thursday evening.
Anyone who saw what happened, at 18:16 at the junction of Whitehall Road is asked to contact Northumbria Police.
A spokesman said: “We understand that a light blue Citroen Picasso, a dark grey BMW three series and a silver Citroen Zara were in the area at the time and the occupants could be important witnesses – so we would urge them to get in touch with us.”
Since the attack in Stanley, County Durham, police have started texting parents when there is trouble.

A cyclist was "shoulder-barged" into a bus lane by a pedestrian, police have said.
The woman fell from her bike into the road on New Bridge Street in Newcastle, but "thankfully no vehicles were on the road at the time" according to a Northumbria Police spokeswoman.
Investigators have released a picture of a man they want to speak about the incident which happened at about 09:00 on 24 October.
Anyone who knows him is asked to contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Hardwick Park near Sedgefield has been named the best destination for a free family day out in the North East (although you do have to pay for parking).
The park, which is owned and managed by Durham County Council, came out top in the best free family day out category of the Family Favourites Awards organised by Dayoutwiththekids.co.uk.
It secured the most votes out of the 20,000 families who took part.
Nigel Dodds, strategic manager for culture and sport at Durham County Council, said: “We are delighted to be among the winners of the first Family Favourites Awards, especially as the decision was made by members of the public."
The park and visitor centre are free to enter but visitors do have to pay for parking.

Shares in Intu, which owns Gateshead's Metrocentre and 17 other malls, have dived after a takeover bid was abandoned.
They sank 38% after a consortium led by Peel Group dropped a £2.8bn takeover plan.
The consortium blamed economic uncertainty and market volatility.
It is the second time this year Intu has been jilted - in April, Hammerson abandoned a bid of £3.4bn.
