    It's day four of disruption on the Tyne and Wear Metro.

    A major section of the network remains closed as work continues on overhead powerlines which came down on Monday.

    Trains started running again between Benton and Wallsend yesterday, but services are still off between St James and Wallsend.

    Polling stations are now open for people to vote in this year’s local elections.

    Here in the North East and Cumbria there are three mayoral votes, including the new role of North of Tyne Mayor.

    There are also 19 councils holding elections, some with all the seats up for grabs and some just a third of councillors. The polls are open until 22:00.

    There will be some bright spells at times this morning but with some cloud likely as well and possibly the odd shower.

    The cloud is expected to become more extensive this afternoon with further showers possible.

    A cloudy night is ahead with showers or longer spells of rain, especially through the first part of the night.

    It will turn rather chilly too as northerly winds begin to bring in colder air.

    Voters in part of England will use a touch screen system to vote tomorrow in a trial developed by the University of Warwick., external

    The test is being carried out in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, and will see voters go into a booth, enter a passcode issued to them and then pick the candidate they want to vote for on a screen.

    The university says they'll then get a receipt allowing them to check their vote was properly cast and recorded.

    A man has been left with serious injuries following an attack in Byker.

    In the early hours of 9 April, the 47-year-old was assaulted and left with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

    Footage of life-saving open heart surgery performed on the street to save the life of a young man is being used to help train other medical teams.

    The man was stabbed in County Durham and had gone into cardiac arrest by the time a Great North Air Ambulance Service helicopter arrived.

    President Trump has been invited to Teesside.

    Conservative Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen has confirmed he has invited President Trump to the area.

    Mr Houchen has written to the White House asking the President to visit this area as part of his state visit in June.

    He says the area already has strong trading links with America and "it's a long- shot, but if you don't ask you don't get".

    He added: “This is not about Trump or his policies, this is about Teesside jobs."

    UKIP has launched its campaign for the European elections in Middlesbrough today.

    The Tell Them Again Tour campaign bus was unveiled outside the Dorman museum before it began its national tour

    The party pledges to fight for the UK's "unilateral and unconditional withdrawal from the EU."

    The UKIP leader Gerard Batten told supporters that membership of the EU was "a cancer at the heart of politics" and accused MPs of betraying the will of the people.

    A woman who appealed for people to help find her missing brother said he has been found.

    Ashleigh Marr previously said she believed her brother Alex Johnson fell from the Tyne Bridge in the early hours of 16 April and appealed for help in finding him.

    Northumbria Police said they recovered a body from the river this morning but a formal identification is yet to take place.

    In a post on Facebook, Ms Marr said: "Today we got our beautiful boy back.

    "We have visited him and he’s resting now"

    Money has been stolen from a cash machine in Benton.

    The money was accidentally left at the cash machine outside Asda, Whitley Road on 28 February.

    Shortly before 20:00 the money was stolen.

    Northumbria Police has now released a CCTV image of a man they would like to speak to.

  18. Third day of disruption for Metro passengerspublished at 14:26 British Summer Time 1 May 2019

    Metro passengers are facing a third day of disruption in parts of Newcastle and North Tyneside.

    Trains between St James and Wallsend are currently suspended in both directions to carry out maintenance on the overhead line.

    This week about 600m (2,000ft) of overhead line came down between Palmersville and West Monkseaton, and a further section of overhead line came down at Chillingham Road.

    Passengers are being reminded that a replacement bus service, external is in place between Wallsend and St James.
