1. Burger King milkshake tweet 'encouraged' anti-social conductpublished at 11:43 British Summer Time 2 October 2019

A Burger King tweet alerting customers it was 'selling milkshakes all weekend' has been banned for condoning and encouraging anti-social behaviour.

The fast food firm's post came after a number of European election candidates had milkshakes thrown at them.

Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage had a milkshake thrown over him in Newcastle in May. A man pleaded guilty to common assault and criminal damage.

A McDonald's in Edinburgh stopped selling the drinks before Mr Farage addressed a rally in the city.

Burger King defended the tweet, calling it a "tongue-in-cheek reaction to recent events".

    BBC Tees

Tributes have been paid to a star of the BBC series The Mighty Redcar after she was found dead in Saltburn at the weekend.

It's understood Jade Smith's body was found at Huntcliff on Sunday evening.

The 21-year-old from Redcar was well known as a campaigner for the Conservatives and made headlines after showing off her tattoo of Boris Johnson.

Tributes have been paid to Jade on social media, with Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland MP Simon Clarke saying she was a "remarkable person" and Anna Turley the MP for Redcar saying that she admired Jade's "commitment and passion".

The director of The Mighty Redcar Dan Dewsbury said on Twitter that Jade was "passionate, brilliant and talented", adding that "it's terribly sad that, at the end, you felt so alone".

Cleveland Police say her death is not being treated as suspicious.

  3. Call to get derelict train station back on trackpublished at 10:42 British Summer Time 2 October 2019

    BBC Tees

A Teesside councillor is calling for action to repair an old railway station to help improve the image of the area.

The former Redcar train station is derelict and hasn't been used in many years, but with new services from the town to Manchester being introduced in December there are concerns the dilapidated building could put people off visiting the town.

Councillor Philip Thomson said he hopes the new owners, The Arch Co, will take action.

The firm told BBC Tees it has invested almost £40,000 in preliminary works to refurbish the station building, including an initial ecologist survey that identified it as a roosting-ground for bats.

It added works are on hold so they don't disturb the wildlife population and will recommence at the start of the roosting season next spring. The firm said it's also discussing possible lease arrangements with Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council.

  4. School inspections: Over 1,000 not visited for a decadepublished at 09:57 British Summer Time 2 October 2019

One in 20 children in England is in a school that has not been inspected for more than 10 years, the BBC has found.

There are 1,010 "outstanding" schools that have not had a visit from Ofsted in a decade - up from 296 in 2017.

Inspecting all schools would ensure they were not "failing or at risk of decline", the National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) said.

Rebecca Bailey from Jarrow said she believed every school should be inspected regularly.

The mother-of-four has been among parents campaigning against the planned closure of South Shields School in 2020 , externalafter it was rated "inadequate" by Ofsted. The Regional Schools Commissioner was unable to find a sponsor to help it convert to an academy so South Tyneside Council took the decision to close it.

Miss Bailey said: "We see schools forced to close due to inadequate ratings... while outstanding schools go uninspected due to their Ofsted grading."

Hartlepool's MP has told the BBC he completely rejects any allegation he sexually harassed a woman.

Mike Hill was suspended by the Labour Party last month and had the whip withdrawn - meaning he currently sits as an independent.

The 56-year-old says since his suspension he's "very grateful" for the messages of support he's received from his constituents.

Labour last month confirmed it was investigating an allegation of sexual harassment, but declined to go into detail.

Hilary Simmons, 59, died on 30 April last year after the incident at the store on Middlesbrough's Corporation Road. Four arrests were made, but the men were released and the investigation was closed.

At the time of her death, Mrs Simmons' family said she was known to all her work colleagues as "Tesco mummy" with staff buying her a gift on Mother's Day to show their appreciation.

  17. Tyne Bridge revamp bid still in balancepublished at 15:36 British Summer Time 1 October 2019

    Local Democracy Reporting Service
    Daniel Holland

A plan to give the Tyne Bridge a much-needed revamp remains in the balance.

News emerged ahead of the Conservative Party conference that Chancellor Sajid Javid was due to commit cash to the long-awaited repair of the iconic structure and the Central Motorway.

But it has now been confirmed that the Treasury is, for now, only providing enough money to help Tyneside council chiefs to further develop the business case for the huge project.

Whether or not a £40m Transport for the North bid, which would allow the works to go ahead, will be approved remains in the balance.

Council bosses on either side of the river have long struggled to find the funding needed to renovate the historic crossing, which last underwent major maintenance two decades ago.

It was hoped that the overdue restoration would have started last year, but Newcastle and Gateshead councils pushed that back to 2020 at the earliest, amid complaints that no government cash had been made available to bid for before this year.

The maintenance would include steelwork repairs, extensive repainting, stonework and masonry repairs, waterproofing, and bridge joint replacement, among other fixes.

  19. Unite warns on no-deal Brexitpublished at 15:04 British Summer Time 1 October 2019

    BBC Business Live

Unite national officer Steve Bush has been commenting on that FT report that suggested Nissan could pull out of Sunderland if there is a disorderly Brexit.

He said: “Unite has been reassured by Nissan that its plans for Qashqai production in Sunderland have not changed.

"However its warning, along with those of other major carmakers and manufacturers about the impact of a cliff-edge Brexit should sharpen the minds of the UK government.

"Crashing out of the European Union with no deal on World Trade Organisation terms could bring just-in-time supply chains to a shuddering halt and destroy future jobs and investment. The clock is ticking.

"The government needs to adhere to law by lifting the threat of a no-deal Brexit and secure a Brexit that maintains the tariff-free frictionless trade upon which the UK’s manufacturing communities depend.”
