  7. Councils to miss clean air deadline againpublished at 16:57 British Summer Time 4 October 2019

    Daniel Holland
    Local Democracy Reporter

Tyneside councils will miss the government’s deadline to finalise plans for cutting illegal levels of air pollution for a third time.

Ministers had threatened legal action against Newcastle, Gateshead, and North Tyneside councils if they do not submit their final designs for a controversial Clean Air Zone (CAZ) by 12 November.

But with a six-week public consultation on the latest plans yet to begin, that date will not be met – though the authorities insist the delay will ultimately have no impact on the anti-pollution tolls coming into force in January 2021.

Under the latest proposals, coaches, buses and lorries will be charged £50 daily to drive into Newcastle city centre if they do not meet emissions standards. High-polluting taxis and vans will also pay £12.50, but private cars have been made exempt for now.

Consultation on the plan was due to begin by the end of September, but the councils say that has been pushed back due to delays in legal advice.

Councillors should have been voting to approve the CAZ at meetings in early November, but that vote could now be pushed back to January unless a set of extraordinary meetings are scheduled before then.

  12. Airport signs won't be changedpublished at 16:46 British Summer Time 4 October 2019

    Local Democracy Reporting Service
    Alex Metcalfe

Highway bosses have revealed there are no plans to change road signs back to Teesside Airport despite concerns holidaymakers are getting lost.

Durham Tees Valley Airport reverted to its previous name of Teesside International Airport in July.

Worries about road signs bearing the old name were raised at Wednesday’s airport consultative committee.

Former airport owners Peel changed the name of the airport to Durham Tees Valley in 2004 and a raft of road signs were altered by councils and the Highways Agency. Handily, some of the old “Teesside” signs were never changed.

In response to the concerns, a spokeswoman for Highways England said: “We have no plans to change the signs at present – and we have not been approached about doing so.”

  14. Sunderland mural has mental health goal in mindpublished at 16:13 British Summer Time 4 October 2019

    Steph Cleasby
    BBC Look North

A mural celebrating one of Sunderland's most famous goals is taking shape next to the Stadium of Light.

Carlos Edwards' spectacular long-range shot against Burnley helped the Black Cats win promotion to the Premier League in 2007.

Fans voted it the most iconic moment in the club's Football League history and it is now being recreated by street artist Frank Styles (pictured).

It's part of a scheme put together by football chiefs and the charity Mind to promote World Mental Health Day next Thursday. The hope is football can be used to help fans talk about more difficult, personal topics.

The white car was spotted upside down in a ditch by an ambulance crew driving on the A19 northbound near Crathorne. They immediately started a rescue effort.

The driver, a man in his late 40s, was taken to hospital, along with a young boy and a young girl.

The front seat passenger, a 29-year-old woman, is believed to have escaped serious injury.

  18. Former scrapyard owner wants answers after blazepublished at 15:21 British Summer Time 4 October 2019

    BBC Tees

The former owner of a Middlesbrough scrapyard destroyed in a fire says he wants answers from the council over what he claims were lapses in security.

Zaf Quyoom sold his Jap Euro breakers yard to Middlesbrough Council in March 2018, after the local authority used a compulsory purchase order to buy the land.

The 700 cars on the site were never removed and earlier this week they were destroyed in a huge blaze.

Middlesbrough Council says Mr Quyoom failed to meet health and safety standards when removing the cars, adding the site was fully secured.
