Janice Woolford, 68, was found dead at a house in Satley Gardens, Sunderland, at 10:00 on Wednesday.
Her son Michael Woolford, 44, had not suffered any visible injuries but had taken a large quantity of drugs and had also died.
Detectives do not believe anyone else is involved and today said the incident is a suspected murder-suicide.
Det Ch Insp Jane Fairlamb said: “This is a tragic case that has obviously had a devastating impact on Janice and Michael’s family.
“An investigation into the circumstances around the death are ongoing but the evidence we have gathered at this stage suggests it as a suspected murder-suicide.
“A post-mortem has taken place that has confirmed Janice died from stab wounds but we still need to wait for a toxicology report to confirm that Michael had died of a drugs overdose.
“Once we have concluded our investigation then we will provide the coroner with a report.
“I would like to reassure members of the community that there is no wider threat to the public and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident at this stage.
“We would ask that the public respect the privacy of the family at what is an incredibly difficult time for them.”

"We’re okay with injuries. Andy [Carroll] isn’t going to make it but Jonjo [Shelvey] has trained for the last 10 days or so. Javier Manquillo is back as well so it’s good to see them back.
“We’re going to decide in the next week or so if he [Ciaran Clark] needs an operation or not. He’s damaged his ankle ligaments badly. He’s been excellent this season. He’s been one of our best players in my opinion so it’s bad news for all of us."

Newcastle United have introduced a training ground handshake ban in an attempt to guard against the spread of coronavirus.
The club has put a stop to a morning ritual of players and staff shaking hands as fears over the spread of the virus increase.
Head coach Steve Bruce said: "There's a ritual here that everybody shakes hands with everybody as soon as we see each other every morning - we've stopped that on the advice of the doctor.
"Were like everybody else. Thankfully, we've got a superb doctor here and he will keep us informed of what we have to do.
"We're like everybody else, we're glued to the TV for where it's going to go next and let's hope it doesn't get any worse in this country."

Parents watching their children play football in Northumberland this weekend have been banned from shouting.
The Northumberland FA said a survey of players found 60% of six to nine year olds "didn't feel safe playing football" because of shouting and swearing from the sidelines.
Andrew Rose-Cook from the organisation said it was a minority of parents who "go too far" and parents can still applaud good play.

A teenager suffered leg injuries after falling from a 10ft (3m) high sea wall in Collywell Bay in Whitley Bay.
The Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade and Blyth Coastguard were called to the scene at about 15:30 yesterday.
The 19-year-old had fallen on to rocks and he and another man who was with him and had gone to his aid were being soaked by waves and at risk of being cut off from land by the incoming tide.
The injured man was carried about 100m to safety before being taken to hospital, a brigade spokesman said.

“We are committed to finding out the circumstances surrounding the incident and an investigation is ongoing to determine events directly before the collision happened.
“I would like to thank members of the public who have already come forward to assist with our enquiries but we would still urge anyone who witnessed the collision, who is yet to contact police, to get in touch as soon as possible.
“We are also keen for anyone who was passing through the area at the time, who may have dashcam footage, to get in touch.”

Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council leader Mary Lanigan has said that “lessons will be learnt” after the authority's website was hacked.
Speaking at the first full council meeting since the authority's website was subject to a ransomware attack Ms Lanigan said that staff had been “working round the clock, to protect frontline services”.
Councillors were told that outside agencies had told staff that their IT systems “did have defences in place, but that going forward lessons will be learned”.
Ms Lanigan also revealed that the authority had been able to recover an unspecified amount of data that had been encrypted by the attackers.
She re-iterated the previously stated position that “there was no evidence to show that personal data had been taken from the server”.
