I was struggling to see how this game would finish in anything but a draw earlier today, but it seems to have taken on a different look this afternoon.
Eleven wickets have now fallen on day three and Durham have been in a fight in their second innings. They lost Alex Lees to a first-baller, Michael Jones for nine and David Bedingham for 28.
Either side of tea Ollie Robinson departed for four and Colin Ackermann for 14. It's a good job they had a first innings lead of 248.
Scott Borthwick, the Durham skipper, has just brought up his half century. And while some correspondents are still complaining about the Durham decision not to enforce the follow-on, I think we have moved onto a different type of game now.
They may already have enough. It is certainly something to ponder.

I can guarantee every time a Durham skipper does not enforce the follow-on, emails start arriving from listeners moments later.
Durham ended up with a first innings lead of 248 after bowling Essex out for 339. But it's hot in Chelmsford and they'd been in the field for three sessions. It's also a decent batting track.
So, sensibly, in my opinion, they decided to bat again, despite Essex being nearly 100 runs short of the target.
More emails arrived when Alex Lees was caught behind, first ball of the second innings off Jamie Porter. Fellow opener Michael Jones was out for nine, six overs later, with Durham leading by 259 at 11-2. Cue more communication from up on high.
Things have settled since then though and I am sure Durham will be looking to set Essex something upwards of 450 later.
Warwickshire did not enforce the follow-on here earlier this season and Essex chased 330. At Blackpool, in May, Durham scored 414 batting fourth. They narrowly lost but it just goes to show you never really know in this day and age what a sensible declaration should be.
PS there are 16 overs to tea. The afternoon session began at 1.55pm.

Durham have taken nine Essex wickets and look like they will end up with a commanding first innings lead here.
The ninth wicket fell in what was the final scheduled over of the morning session, when Peter Siddle had Simon Harmer caught behind for nine.
But umpires Paul Pollard and Martin Saggers have allowed the extra half hour to be taken so Durham can try and finish off the innings in the session, thus not lose any overs for a change of innings later.
If they don't get the final wicket in the eight overs added, then that would be lunch.

Durham know only too well how good a batting track this is, having made 587 runs on it - and they also know how difficult it will be to take 20 Essex wickets.
Durham's first innings lasted four sessions and despite reducing their hosts to 120-4 in the 34th over, Paul Walter and Matt Critchley have now put on 129 runs for the fifth wicket.
Walter, who has returned following a toe injury, has 74 and Critchley 51.

Durham's total of 587 was their highest against Essex. They had Essex in the field for four sessions in the heat before they were out just before lunch.
The follow-on target is 436 and at the moment that looks a long way off with the hosts four down at tea. But in this heat, would Durham bowl two innings straight off anyway?
Nick Browne, who was dropped in the slips on 10, eventually perished eight runs later, caught behind off Matty Potts for 18. Potts later bowled the dangerous Jordan Cox for 32 as well.
There were big celebrations among the Durham players when Dean Elgar was out for 40, caught at first slip by Scott Borthwick off the bowling of Peter Siddle.
The other wicket saw skipper Tom Westley fall lbw to Ben Raine for 24.
