Durham's total of 587 was their highest against Essex. They had Essex in the field for four sessions in the heat before they were out just before lunch.
The follow-on target is 436 and at the moment that looks a long way off with the hosts four down at tea. But in this heat, would Durham bowl two innings straight off anyway?
Nick Browne, who was dropped in the slips on 10, eventually perished eight runs later, caught behind off Matty Potts for 18. Potts later bowled the dangerous Jordan Cox for 32 as well.
There were big celebrations among the Durham players when Dean Elgar was out for 40, caught at first slip by Scott Borthwick off the bowling of Peter Siddle.
The other wicket saw skipper Tom Westley fall lbw to Ben Raine for 24.
