    York City Knights have announced the signing of six more players for 2017. 

    They club's signed second row forwards Joe Batchelor and Liam Thompson from Coventry, along with loose forward Chris Siddons from Castleford Lock Lane, and former Wakefield Academy forward Ronan Dixon.

    Also returning to the club are prop Micky Learmonth and forward Adam Robinson, who had a short spell on loan from Halifax last season.

    Next year is the 250th anniversary of one of York’s most famous employers, the confectionery maker Terry's.

    The company's factory on Bishopthorpe Road closed in 2005 with production moving abroad and the building converted into housing.

  3. North Yorkshire firefighters launch industrial actionpublished at 09:21

    North Yorkshire firefighters have launched 19 days of industrial action in a dispute over new fire engines.

    The work-to-rule is in protest against the introduction of smaller Tactical Response Vehicles (TRVs) which carry three crew instead of the usual four.

    The Fire Brigades Union's action is due to last until 10 January.

    North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service has said the TRVs would "have no significant adverse impact" on its service or on the safety of staff.

  5. York travellers call for more flood supportpublished at 08:37 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2016

    A group of travellers who lost their caravans during the Boxing Day floods in York say if they're flooded again they'd like more help from the council. 

    Nine families had to move out of the James Street site for several months after losing most of their possessions.

    The council says it's working with the York Travellers Trust, external to look at "long term resilience" for the site and will help with designs and delivery.

    Just under 100 refugees from Syria are now living in North Yorkshire, figures from Migration Yorkshire show.

    That number's out of a total of almost 700 across the region who've been housed under the vulnerable person's relocation scheme

    Another 160 Syrian refugees are due to arrive in North Yorkshire between now and 2018, as the government resettles up to 20,000 refugees across the UK. 

    Duncan Wells, from the Refugee Council for Yorkshire and the Humber, says the transition to life in North Yorkshire is often not straightforward for those involved:

  7. Met Office warning over Storm Barbarapublished at 07:59

    A yellow "be aware" warning's been issued by the Met Office, external, with very strong winds forecast for Yorkshire and the north of England on Friday and Saturday.

    Gusts of 60 to 70mph are expected as Storm Barbara hits the UK.

    The Met Office has warned of the potential for some structural damage, though that's more likely in the north west, as well as disruption to power supplies and travel.

    Barbara is only the second name designated this season, which began on 1 October, and follows Storm Angus, which brought high winds and rain to parts of Britain in November.

    There are no significant delays on trains out of York Railway Station at the moment, according to the live departure board, external.

    On the roads, Bridge Street in Tadcaster (A659) is still closed both ways due to long-standing repairs taking place.

    And a new roundabout is being built on the A19 at Barlby at the junction with the A163 Market Weighton road, possibly causing delays.

    Meanwhile, here are five things we've learned about our county so far today:  

    1. Campaigners against plans to frack for shale gas in Ryedale have set up camp at the proposed site in Kirby Misperton and say they're prepared to remain there for "months".
    2. A York couple who had to move out of their home after it was flooded a year ago say they now will not be able to move back in before Christmas
    3. Councillors in York are considering whether to re-issue a licence to taxi operator Uber after a flood of complaints since it began operating in the city
    4. An unwrapped present has been found on Station Road in Filey and police would like to reunite it with its owner before Christmas
    5. York City fans are being advised to arrive early for Boxing Day's match away to North Ferriby if they want to avoid queues at the turnstiles

  14. Appeal after tools and equipment stolen from Skipton garagepublished at 14:19 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2016

    Tools and plant equipment have been stolen from a garage in Skipton after burglars forced their way in, external.

    The theft took place at the garage on Hayton Way, just off Granville Street, between about 16:00 last Friday and 08:00 on Monday morning.

    Police are asking anyone with information or who witnessed the burglary to come forward.

    In particular, detectives are wanting information about a white Ford Transit van which was seen acting suspiciously in the area at about midday on Sunday 18 December.

    Christmas is a time to be with your the family, so how lovely that we can tell you that four seals who've spent time at Scarborough's Sealife Centre are finally heading home today.

    Bearnaise and Dill were found in Redcar in August with really swollen muzzle mouths. It's also thought they had the herpes virus infection. 

    Only six or seven-weeks-old when rescued, both took time to recover - but are now fighting fit. 

    Meanwhile, eight-week-old Wasabi was rescued from Hartlepool with the same problems, while Piccalilli was found in Ravenscar in September and had lots of wounds all over his body as well as seal pox, an illness similar to human chicken pox but much nastier.

    The pictures above show them all just minutes before they were released a little earlier.

    More than 100 teddies have been delivered to a hospital to keep sick children company over Christmas.

    Twins Ella and Juliet Taylor, from York, encouraged their school friends to donate a bear to cheer up patients at Leeds General Infirmary.

    Juliet came up with the idea after she was given a bear on Christmas Day while receiving treatment for a brain tumour:
