One anti-fracking campaigner says she's "obviously disappointed" at the ruling.

The Reverend Jackie Cray says: "There is no support in North Yorkshire for this risky industry.

"We will continue to campaign on behalf of local communities for the sake of our children and their children's health and wellbeing, and the long-term prosperity of our area.

"We are not prepared for Ryedale to become a sacrifice zone for the sake of industry greed."

Mrs Justice Lang has ruled against the legal challenge brought by local residents and Friends of the Earth who claimed the planning permission granted by North Yorkshire County Council to Third Energy was "unsound".

David Davis, one of the residents behind the legal action, says: "We respect Mrs Justice Lang's decision, whose duty was to carefully interpret the law as it stands today."

    Quote Message

Our greatest disappointment is with the government, our own MP, and an industry conspiring to force fracking on unwilling communities with the threat of overruling councils who refuse planning permission."

The appeal was brought by Friends of the Earth and campaign group Frack Free Ryedale.

When the council approved the bid to undertake tests at the site near Pickering, it was the first fracking operation to be approved in England since a ban was lifted in 2012.

Frack Free Ryedale said the judicial review was based on two objections:

    • That NYCC did not consider the impact of fracking on climate change
    • That the council did not put provision in planning conditions to finance future remedial works that might be needed because of the impact of the process

North Yorkshire County Council has said it's given "proper regard to all material planning considerations before approving the application".

There are currently 600 young people who're being looked after by our local authorities.

James Ray, who lived at Easingwold, died last year, on his 70th birthday, after either being pushed or having fallen in a car jacking at an industrial estate in Ashton-under-Lyne.

The robbery happened while Mr Ray was unloading washing powder at a laundry.

The court heard it was accepted that none of the defendants knew Mr Ray was inside the van when they drove off, but must have known an accident had happened, as the side door of the van was torn from its hinges.

    • Mark Ward Jnr, of Royd Street, Rochdale, was jailed for 13 years after being given an eight-year sentence for manslaughter and five years for conspiracy to steal.
    • Patrick McDonagh, of The Cray, Milnrow, was jailed for eight years and four months for manslaughter, conspiracy to steal and breaching a previous suspended sentence.
    • Patrick Cawley, of Orchard Crescent, Chadderton, received a seven-year jail sentence for manslaughter, three months for a separate burglary and an eight-month concurrent sentence for conspiracy to steal.
  13. Decision due on Kirby Misperton fracking challengepublished at 07:45

A judge is due to rule later on a bid to overturn a decision by North Yorkshire County Council earlier this year to allow fracking near Pickering.

    Protesters outside High Court

Campaigners challenged the permission given to Third Energy to use fracking - which involves drilling shale rock and injecting high-pressure water to release gas - at Kirby Misperton.

At a two-day hearing at the High Court last month, campaigners from Frack Free Ryedale and Friends of the Earth argued the council had failed to address the impact of climate change and did not assess the long-term impact of fracking.

In a statement, North Yorkshire County Council said it had given "proper regard to all material planning considerations before approving the application".
