  8. Listen: Flood-hit York couple still unable to return home one year onpublished at 10:17 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2016

    Elly Fiorentini
    Reporter, BBC Radio York

This weekend, it'll be a year since the River Foss broke its banks last Christmas.

As the rain fell, Environment Agency staff made the decision to lift the flood defence barrier as they believed it would create less damage than if it had been left in place.

The barrier couldn't cope with the volume of water it was pumping through.

Many families have now moved back into their homes, but for York couple John and Jan Findlay they won't be in their house for Christmas.

Their home backs onto the River Foss at Fishergate and started to flood on Boxing day.

I've been back to see how things are coming along:

The row over fracking in North Yorkshire rumbles on this morning.

Campaigners say they won't give up their fight to stop the technique being used to extract gas from a site in Ryedale, close to Kirkby Misperton, despite the High Court yesterday ruling that North Yorkshire County Council was right to approve planning permission for test drilling.
