    I watched students get pens out to sign sign steel girders at New College Doncaster.

    More than 600 have already signed up for the college which is due to open in September in Auckley at a cost of £20m. The people behind it are The New Collaborative Learning Trust

  4. Yorkshire Building Society to close branchespublished at 17:28 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2017

    Bradford-based Yorkshire Building Society is to close 48 branches across the country putting over 400 jobs at risk.

    Today's announcement means some YBS branches in Yorkshire will close, you can check which ones here, external.

    But the group has also announced it'll phase out the Norwich & Peterborough brand, impacting around 100,000 current account holders. 

    The N&P name's existed for over 150 years - although YBS only took it over in 2011. 

    The company says it hopes to minimise redundancies as it focuses more on its mortgages and savings businesses.

    A couple of pot bellied pigs  - George and Mildred  - along with some sheep and goats are now a part of daily life at a school in Barnsley.

    After six months of work by volunteers, Milefield Primary School at Grimethorpe has set up its own community farm.

    Pupils lend a hand at feeding time and teachers come in on their day off to look after the animals:

    The company that's been granted permission to drill at a site near Pickering says anti-fracking protestors should meet them. 

    A so-called "protection camp" remains ongoing at Kirby Misperton near Rydale.

  11. Ice hockey player Tom Squires guilty of child sex offencespublished at 16:17 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2017

    A professional ice hockey player from Sheffield is facing jail, after admitting sex offences against girls under the age of 16. 

    Tom Squires, who used to play for the Steelers, the Hull Stingrays and Great Britain, pleaded guilty to four counts of inciting sexual activity with a child, and one of sexual activity with a child. 

    The offences against five victims took place in the Sheffield area between 2011 and 2016. The 26-year-old, of Steven Crescent in Chapeltown, will be sentenced next month.

    The government has released a snapshot of how many people are is sleeping rough - with the overall UK figure on the rise.

    These numbers shouldn't be confused with the total number of people who are homeless, this is simply a count of people found to be sleeping rough in a city on a given night when the counting takes place.

    The figures, released today by the Department of Communities and Local Government, show an increase in autumn 2016 of 16% from the same period the year before. 

    They show mixed results for Yorkshire with the number in York remaining the same but rising by 36% in Sheffield and 53% in Leeds.  

    This comparison in South Yorkshire shows how much it can vary 

    • Barnsley had nine rough sleepers in 2015 and two in 2016
    • Doncaster had nine rough sleepers in 2015 and 13 in 2016
    • Rotherham had three rough sleepers in 2015 and six in 2016
    • Sheffield had 11 in 2015 and 15 in 2016

    • Forest have kept a clean sheet in each of their last three trips to Elland Road in league competition (W2 D1).
    • Chris Wood has been directly involved in five goals in his last six league games against Nottingham Forest (four goals, one assist).
    • Along with Brentford, Leeds have used the fewest players in the Championship this season (23), while Nottingham Forest have used the most (33).

    An 11-year-old boy who killed himself amid claims he was being bullied at school had been doing other pupils’ homework for payment, external, a court has heard. 

    Asad Khan was found by his mother after she forced her way through the locked door to his bedroom at their home in Bradford on 28 September.

  16. Men convicted of sexually abusing Rotherham girlspublished at 15:15 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2017

    Five men, including three brothers, have been found guilty of sexually exploiting two young girls, external in Rotherham. 

    The convictions were in relation to targetting two vulnerable young girls in Eastwood between 1999 and 2001, grooming them and subjecting them to horrific sexual abuse:

    • 32 year old Basharat Dad from Eldon Road in Eastwood was found guilty of six counts of rape
    • His 36-year-old brother Nasar Dad, of Cranworth Road, was convicted of rape, 
    • Another brother 34 year old Tayab Dad from St Lawrence Road in Tinsley in Sheffield, was found guilty of one count of rape
    • Mohammed Sadiq who's 40 and from Oxley Grove in Rotherham and 42 year old Matloob Hussain, from The Yews in Doncaster Road in Rotherham, were each found guilty of one count of sexual intercourse with a girl under 13

    Temporary Detective Chief Inspector Martin Tate, who led the inquiry, thanked the women for their courage over the last two years.

    In a hearing at Sheffield Crown Court in February last year, 36-year-old Amjad Ali of Broad Lane, Hodthorpe, Worksop, pleaded guilty to one count of sexual intercourse with a girl under 13. He will be sentenced alongside the others convicted at Sheffield Crown Court on Thursday 2 February.  

  17. Hunt master's sex suggestion to protesterpublished at 15:13 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2017

    A hunt master in Yorkshire who is also a Tory Councillor for Breckland Council in Norfolk has been suspended by his party over comments captured on video by a hunt protester.

    Charles Carter, who was recently appointed as master of the Middleton Hunt, was filmed while he was out with the hunt.

    Linda Hoggard, had been following the horses for several hours to protest about hunting and she streamed the encounter on Facebook Live.

    After Ms Hoggard did not give her name, Mr Carter told her: "I'd quite like to shag you actually." He then said: "Can I take to you bed please?"

    Ms Hoggard later wrote on Facebook: "He wanted a reaction from me as he was taping me... I ain't that stupid... he's in the wrong, not me."

    The BBC has approached Mr Carter for comment.

  19. Dangerous driver jailed for three years after causing serious injurypublished at 15:00 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January 2017

    A Bradford driver has been jailed for three years for dangerous driving after causing serious injury to three people in a high-speed crash in Brighouse.

    Ihtisham Shabir, 24, lost control of his Audi on a bend on the A644 Wakefield Road in Cooper Bridge in June 2015. He smashed into a VW Golf coming the opposite way. Witnesses say he was driving at 100mph.

    He was said to have ignored his frightened passengers when they told him to slow down. He said he knew what he was doing as he overtook several vehicles at high speed before the crash. 

    In addition to his jail sentence Mr. Shabir will also be banned from driving for four years.
