    A Bradford taxi driver who murdered his wife's lover and his friend six years ago has been given a life sentence with a minimum tariff of 31 years.

    Mohammed Zubair, 36, fled to Pakistan after the killings, but was extradited last year to face trial in Bradford. 

    In May 2011, at his home in Barkerend, Zubair used a dumb-bell bar to savagely beat to death electrician Ahmedin Khyel, who'd been having an affair with Zubair's wife. 

    Mr Khyel's friend, Imran Khan, an innocent bystander, was also murdered by Zubair, who then dumped the men's bodies in a lane in the outskirts of Bradford before fleeing abroad. 

    Two years later, Zubair was detained in Pakistan and was extradited last May to stand trial at Bradford Crown Court, where he was found guilty of the two murders.    

  2. Cash injection for new Rotherham education centrepublished at 14:36 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2017

    The £10.5m higher education centre in Rotherham, which is due to open in autumn next year, has been awarded £3.5m from the Sheffield City Region.

    The state-of-the-art university centre will run a range of higher education programmes for students and employers, with over 50 courses expected to be running by 2020.

    It'll be run by Rotherham College and it's hoped the project will address the skills gap.

    Currently, only 23% of people in the town have a higher education qualification compared to the national average of 36%. 

  3. Jorvik Viking Festival finale relocates to Eye of Yorkpublished at 14:27 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2017

    The Jorvik Viking Festival brings in thousands of visitors to York each year and it's an opportunity for hundreds of re-enactors to recreate a Viking battle.

    The end of the festival, which will see hundreds of warriors on a makeshift battlefield for "Bloodaxe's Last Stand", was due to take place on Saturday 25 February at Rawcliffe Country Park.

    But it's been announced that those plans have had to change because the site is waterlogged.

    That means this year's finale will move back to the Eye of York which is next to Clifford's Tower.

  4. Pedestrian killed on Leeds Ring Road is namedpublished at 14:16 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2017

    A woman who was killed on Leeds Outer Ring Road at the weekend has been named by police, external.

    Rachel Watson, 43, was walking along the Ring Road near the junction with Tongue Lane in Moortown at about 10:20 on Saturday when she was hit by a grey Vauxhall Corsa. 

    Mrs Watson was taken to Leeds General Infirmary with life-threatening injuries but died later that day.

    The male driver of the Corsa stopped at the scene and has been spoken to by police.   

    Anyone who witnessed the incident, or saw the vehicle or Mrs Watson, who was wearing running clothes, in the time leading up to the collision is being asked to get in touch with police.

  6. Rotherham loses overnight fire enginepublished at 13:55 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2017

    Rotherham will no longer have two fire engines fully manned at night.

    The decision to change staffing at the fire station was taken four years ago because of budget cuts.

    The second fire engine at the site on Fitzwilliam Road will remain permanently available during the day, but becomes "on call" at night by the end of March.  

    The fire service has lost £14m in government funding since 2010 and is likely to lose a further £2m between now and 2020.

    They are beautiful to look at and are being re-introduced in North Yorkshire but tests on two red kites which were found dead last year, show that they were poisoned.

    North Yorkshire Police's Rural Task Force are appealing for witnesses.

    The two red kites were found dead in the Nidderdale area, where animal carcasses were laced with poison in order to kill other wildlife. 

    Police say such substances are a serious risk to anyone who comes into contact with them, particularly children or pets.

    A theatre in Leeds is being urged to take meat off its cafe menu as it shows Babe, the Sheep Pig.

    The animal welfare charity PETA says it's offered to supply vegan hot dogs for the first day of the show at the West Yorkshire Playhouse. 

    It says "a move to a meat-free cafe would be well in keeping with Babe's legacy".

  9. Cricket: Sheffield's Joe Root 'obvious' candidate for England captaincypublished at 13:31 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2017

    Joe Root is the "obvious candidateto be named as England Test captain - but the role must not affect his batting, says pace bowler James Anderson.

    Batsman Root is the favourite to take over from Alastair Cook, who stepped down on Monday after a record 59 Tests.

    The Yorkshire player had been Test vice-captain to Cook since May 2015.

    Two cars are reported to have been driven dangerously along a pavement near two York primary schools.

    Police say it happened between Heworth Road and Stockton Lane last Thursday between 08:45 and 09:15 when children were being dropped off.

    A Ford Focus and a Volkswagen Golf are both reported to have driven towards oncoming traffic before mounting the pavement.  Other drivers and pedestrians had to take evasive action to avoid a crash.

    Police have named a motorcyclist who was killed after a crash in Bramley, in Leeds, on Sunday.

    Christopher Maidens, who was 30, was riding his Suzuki GSXR 750 along the A647 Stanningley Road when he was in collision with a grey Volvo S40 which was turning into Armley Grange Drive.

    A grandmother and two children have been rescued from a house fire in South Yorkshire. 

    Firefighters helped free them from the property on Barnsley Road in Cudworth in the early hours of this morning. 

    They were taken to hospital suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation.

    Healthcare workers in Wakefield are working together in what's being seen as a possible way to improve healthcare across the country and save the NHS money.

    Each week they meet to plan the care that will be offered to the mostly elderly people they are working with in a number of care homes in the Wakefield district.

    They work to build up a complete picture of how best to help each patient.  

    Everyone here stresses it's about improving patient care. 

    But there are savings to be made. They estimate that if they roll this project across the whole district, by 2021 they will make a net saving of £5.3m a year.

    A new police team in Doncaster town centre say they have dealt with more than 100 cases of rough sleeping in three months.

    Since it was set up in November, the team has also caught 45 shoplifters, arrested 32 wanted people and found seven missing people.

  16. North Yorkshire teenager dies in crashpublished at 12:15 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2017

    Two teenagers, one of them a girl from Selby, have died following a car crash.

    The 16-year-old girl and 17-year-old boy were passengers in a Volkswagen Polo which left the road and hit a tree in Howden in East Yorkshire last night. 

    It happened close to the junction with the B1228 Boothferry Road at about 20:15.   

    A 19-year-old man sustained minor injuries and has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

    After more than a year, Elland Bridge in West Yorkshire has reopened following the damage that was caused by the 2015 Christmas floods.

    The Grade II-listed structure had to be dismantled and rebuilt after the floods badly damaged the arches which hold up the roadway.

    Two more people have been arrested in Sheffield, after protesting against tree-felling in Chippinghouse Road in Netheredge.

    They were arrested on suspicion of preventing lawful work under Section 241 of the Trade Union and Relation Act 1992, South Yorkshire Police have confirmed.  

    The tree-felling is a city-wide maintenance project to upgrade roads, pavements, street lights and bridges.

    The Streets Ahead scheme, external includes the removal of diseased, damaged or dangerous trees, but campaigners claim healthy trees are also being unnecessarily destroyed.

    Luxury sports car producer McLaren Automotive is coming to the Sheffield City Region, creating more than 200 jobs and promising a £100m boost to the local economy.   

    The company is to open a purpose-built factory next to the University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, off the Sheffield Parkway.
