    The University of Sheffield has started an appeal to raise £2m for a scanner which could transform research into a number of life-changing diseases.

    The MRI-PET scanner would be the first in Yorkshire, and one of only eight in the UK.  

    The revolutionary scans provide superior information about the organs, tissues, and structures in the body and how well they are functioning.

    Researchers say it can help enhance understanding of serious conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, epilepsy; heart and lung disease, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease - and how they are treated in the future.

    Former chef Paul Baron only opened his kebab shop nine months ago and it has now been named as one of the best.

    I Am Doner in Leeds won the Best Delivery Award at The British Kebab Awards.

    The kebab shop serves vegetarian and vegan options made from a Syrian family recipe as well as donor kebabs that are gluten and dairy free.

    A teenager from Tadcaster is preparing to address a crowd of more than 1,000 people later.

    Jemima Browning, who's only 16-years-old, is giving the opening speech at the Youth Sport Trust's annual conference. 

    She'll be talking about how she set up Stingrays, a swimming club for young people with disabilities, with her brother last year.

    A construction firm has been ordered to pay out more than £4,000 after being prosecuted by Sheffield City Council’s Environmental Protection Service for irresponsibly disposing of waste.

    Two loads of building waste were found on land at Skye Edge field, off Manor Laith Road, Wybourn.

    Timber, wooden cabinets, plastics, cardboard, a bath, windows, tiles, plaster and rubble as well as ash, food waste and several letters were found.

    RM City Construction Ltd, of Mount Street, Sheffield were told to pay £3,000, with £342 clean-up costs and £368 legal costs being awarded to Sheffield City Council.

    York's Labour MP says "rationing" of surgery for obese people or smokers in parts of North Yorkshire is "financially perverse." 

    Rachael Maskell held a debate about it the issue in Parliament last night. 

    People in North Yorkshire with a body mass index over 30 must lose weight or face a year-long delay to having an operation for things like knee and hip replacements.

    Chris Tapping, from Ripon - pictured below before and after his weight loss - says he was initially devastated when his doctor told him he had to lose a lot of weight before having a hip op as he weighted 23 stone at the time.

    But now, at 16.5 stone, Chris says being forced to lose weight was life-changing:

  8. Two left with 'significant injuries' after collision in Wakefield published at 13:38

    A man and a woman in their 20s have both suffered possibly life-threatening injuries after the car they were driving in was in collision with a parked HGV in Wakefield early today.

    The incident happened at about 04:20 on Lime Pit Lane, Stanley, and involved a white Hyundai car travelling in the direction of Lake Lock Road.

    Both occupants of the car were left with what police describe as "significant injuries".

    Sgt Martin Greasley says: "We're carrying out a range of enquiries, but would appeal for anyone who witnessed the collision itself, or who saw a white Hyundai i20 driving in the area shortly before the collision, to get in touch."

    Former Yorkshire and England skipper Michael Vaughan says the death of Yorkshire County Cricket Club president John Hampshire is a "sad, sad day for Yorkshire cricket and world cricket".

    Mr Hampshire, 76, was a former club captain, Yorkshire and England batsman and a successful Test umpire.

    In a post on his Instagram page, external , Vaughan added: "John Hampshire gave me so much advice down at Abbeydale park in Sheffield.

    "Always with a nice dry sense of humour...He will be dearly missed but never forgotten."

    League Two leaders Doncaster Rovers took advantage of a slip-up by second-placed Plymouth last night to move six points clear at the top of the table.

    Rovers won at Cambridge United, but almost squandered all three points .

    Boss Darren Ferguson thought his side deserved the three points: "It would've been a travesty if we hadn't won that game. I thought we were outstanding, it was an excellent team performance.

    "Some of our football in the first half was very, very good and I'm delighted with the players."

    Last night, emergency services were called to an accident on Long Street in Easingwold, North Yorkshire.

    As you can see from the picture above, it's amazing no-one was hurt. 

    Jade Barnes lives just a couple of doors down from where the accident happened.

    She's told me: "The house the car crashed into was the house of a heavily pregnant lady who is my friend's sister so I went to check she was OK.

    "We heard a crash but presumed it was people putting the bins out. 

    "It was only when I saw the emergency services that I knew something awful had happened."

  14. West End musical comes to Batley to celebrate life of Jo Coxpublished at 12:42 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2017

    A schools edition of the hit west end musical Les Miserables is coming to Batley this summer to celebrate the life of murdered Batley and Spen Labour MP Jo Cox.

    It was Ms Cox’s favourite musical and the special production will be performed entirely by students and young people.

    Award-winning West End director Nick Evans will be working with Batley and Spen Theatre company along with his own choreographers, musical directors, and musicians.

    The unique event is also auditioning local young people for the production with the hope of finding the next stars of stage and screen. 

    Anyone who is interested is encouraged to come to a workshop weekend on 11 and 12 March at St Mary's Social Club and Parochial Hall, Melton Street, Crossbank, Batley.

  16. Leeds job cuts at insurance firm Avivapublished at 12:26

    A total of 59 jobs are being cut by the insurance company Aviva in Leeds.

    The firm says the work previously done in the city will be outsourced to a specialist third party provider.

    It means 72 workers will be left at its Boar Lane officer in the city centre. 

    The remaining staff will be moved to new offices in Leeds by September.

    A new 300-acre hotel and lodge complex is being built on an old mine site in the Peak District.

    Work's already started on the £400m resort in Unstone, between Sheffield and Chesterfield.

    Developers have had planning permission for nearly 30 years, and they hope fantastic access to the great outdoors will bring in the visitors.

    The current Club President of Yorkshire County Cricket has died following a long illness.

    John Hampshire was a former Club captain, Yorkshire and England batsman, and successful Test umpire.

    As a member of the great Yorkshire side of the 1960s and a five-time Championship winner, John played eight Tests and three one-day internationals, famously scoring a century on his Test debut against the West Indies at Lord's in 1969.
