    Yorkshire's County Cricket club's chief executive has warned it's "crunch time" for the future of international cricket in Leeds.

    Mark Arthur says it's due to ongoing delays to the £38m redevelopment of Headingley.

    More than 92% of York children have been given a place at their first choice of secondary school, according to figures published by City of York council. 

    That's an increase of 1.3% on last year. 

    The number of online applications for primary school places has continued to increase to more than 96%. 

    Parents who applied online will be notified of their child's place by email and letters are being sent out today, the council says.

    An investigation's under way in South Yorkshire after fire crews spent the night tackling a blaze at a scrapyard, external .

    At its height, five fire crews were involved in dealing with the blaze at the yard on Boulder Bridge Lane after being called at about 22:30 on Tuesday.

    Fire crews from Cudworth, Barnsley, Dearne, Tankersley and Rotherham spent several hours bringing the fire, involving about 100 tonnes of aluminium, under control.

    One crew remains at the scene this morning as damping down continues, and work to find out the cause of the blaze will take place once it's completely out, the fire service says.

    The medals of a Sheffield-born World War One soldier who was decorated for gallantry three times in three weeks - probably without firing a shot - are set to be auctioned .

    William Peniston joined the Kings Royal Rifle Corps and became a stretcher bearer.

    During the slaughter of the Somme he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal, the Military Medal and a Bar.

    The "remarkable" collection is set to go under  the hammer in London, external  with a guide price of £8,000-£10,000.

    New harsher penalties come into force this morning for drivers caught using their mobile phones while at the wheel. 

    Offenders will receive six penalty points on their licence with a £200 fine, that's up from three points and a £100 fine. 

    Motorists who've only had their licences for about two years will now face a ban if they're caught using their phone.

    A third gender option will be included on Bradford Council's forms this year. 

    As well as Mr, Mrs and Miss, a new "Mx" box or "Mixter" will be added, for people who're transgender, or don't identify themselves as male or female. 

    Bradford's only the third local authority in the country to do this. 

    Lisa Lee, founder of Bradford-based Transgender support group Trans Mission, says the third gender option is one of the few things the council can do:

    A 32-year-old man's been arrested on suspicion of murdering Aseel Al-Essaie, external in Sheffield last month.

    Mr Al-Essaie, 23, died in hospital after being shot in the chest in Daniel Hill, Walkley on Saturday 18 February.  

    A 29-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder and a 23-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender have been bailed pending further enquiries, police say.

    Anyone with information about Mr Al-Essaie’s death is being asked to get in touch with police.

    Hundreds of people have signed a petition calling for the reopening of a police station in Dinnington, South Yorkshire.

    Local residents say they've felt "unsafe" since it closed. 

    South Yorkshire's Police and Crime Commissioner says the station hadn't been used properly for years and money is being better spent elsewhere.

    Bradford City are unbeaten in the league at home for a year - but it meant a 17th draw of the League 1 season as it finished 2-2 with MK Dons last night .

    Having trailed twice, manager Stuart McCall said it was a well-earned point: "It was good character for the lads to bounce back. There were two good set-plays and how the second half had no goals, I'll never know because both sides were at it.

    "We've stood here many a time this season thinking we deserved a lot more but tonight was a fair point."

    A North Yorkshire MP wants to overturn measures which will delay some operations for obese people or smokers .

    All groups buying in healthcare across North Yorkshire must meet new criteria to try and get people healthier before they have surgery.

    In York, it means people with a body mass index of more than 30 face a 12-month wait for certain operations.

    Calderdale Council has apologised for dumping tonnes of rubble on the graves of a Brighouse man's parents, wife and baby daughter .

    Stephen Booth's wife died eight years ago from cancer, at the age of just 49. Before that, the couple lost their baby daughter, Alice Marie, at just 27-days-old. 

    They, along with Stephen's parents, are buried at Brighouse Cemetery.

    But earlier this week Mr Booth found tonnes of soil and clay had been dumped on top of their graves.

    Andrew Pitts, Calderdale Council's head of neighbourhoods, says when preparing for burials, neighbouring graves are sometimes affected, but council workers do what they can to tidy affected plots.

    "We're sorry for the damage caused to the plants, and we're happy to meet Mr Booth on site to arrange for new bulbs to be planted," says Mr Pitts.

    "Once we were made aware of the problem we contacted Mr Booth immediately and apologised for any distress this has caused."

    Police in Rotherham say they're "extremely concerned" for the welfare of a 77-year-old man who's been missing since yesterday.

    Barry Jones was last seen in Ashton at about 10:20 on Tuesday.

    He's described as about 5ft 8ins tall, of slim build with a shaved head. 

    He was last seen wearing blue jeans, a thermal vest and a green coat with a leather collar.

    Anyone who's seen or heard from Barry since yesterday is being asked to urgently contact police.

    A woman had to be rescued from the sea in Scarborough last night, after going into the water to save her pet dog at the peak of a high spring tide.

    The coastguard was called at about 17:45 and Scarborough's inshore RNLI lifeboat was already out on an exercise, meaning its crew could also attend. 

    Helmsman Matt Marks said: "The casualty was clinging to the lifebelt and starting to go under because of the backwash from the Spa wall."  

    The woman and her dog were both rescued and were left shocked and cold, but otherwise unharmed.   

    John Senior, lifeboat operations manager, said: "We can’t stress too much how important it is not to try and rescue animals that have entered the sea, as they nearly always manage to make their own way out unaided."

  18. Murderer Tanveer Ahmed inspires Pakistani hardliners from jail published at 08:09 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2017

    When Tanveer Ahmed, from Bradford, was sentenced to a minimum of 27 years in jail for murder last August, Judge Lady Rae said he had committed a "brutal, barbaric and horrific crime".

    Ahmed (pictured) stabbed to death Glasgow shopkeeper Asad Shah - who belonged to the persecuted Ahmadi sect - because he believed he was committing blasphemy by uploading online videos in which he claimed to be a prophet.

    But in Pakistan, Ahmed is developing a growing number of supporters who see him as a "defender of Islam" for having killed someone they believed to be disrespecting the Prophet Muhammad. Read more here .

  19. Fire crews continue to tackle Barnsley scrapyard blazepublished at 08:00 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2017

    A blaze at a scrapyard in Barnsley is likely to burn for the rest of the day, according to South Yorkshire Fire Service.

    At its height, 18 firefighters tackled the blaze at Wigley's bus dismantlers on Boulder Bridge Lane, Carlton.

    About 100 tonnes of scrap were well alight when fire crews arrived after being called at 11:30 last night.

    The cause of the fire is "unknown but under investigation", according to the fire service.
