    The finalists of this years York Culture Awards have been announced.

    The event is in its second year and is organised by the city's tourist office Make it York.

    Nominees include the Big City Read and York Early Musical Festival for Cultural Event of the year.

    Ian Chalk will be attending with The York Jazz Initiative, who are finalists in the Cultural Education category:

    The awards celebrate creativity in York, including music, fine art, theatre, writing, and performance.

    There were more than 70 entries but only 30 have been selected in 12 categories.

    A new report says more needs to be done to support older people in North Yorkshire.

    North Yorkshire County Council are asking people to forget the stereotype of "an aging population" as a drain on our NHS and support services.

    Leeds will hand in its bid to become European Capital of Culture in 2023 today.

    Every year, two cities are designated Capital of Culture by the European Union and organise a series of cultural events.

    Leeds is up against Nottingham, Dundee, Milton Keynes and Belfast.

    There's a day of celebrations ahead, including a big party at Quarry Hill with music, performers, food and drink.

  5. Royal Marines sentenced for sex acts in nightclubpublished at 07:11 British Summer Time 27 October 2017

    Three Royal Marines, including a man from Thirsk, who took part in a "hideous, puerile and repugnant" initiation rite in an Angus nightclub have been given community sentences.

    Forfar Sheriff Court was told that the men had been thrown out of the military

    Luke Bowen, Jordan Coia, Ben James, and civilian Craig Lynch carried out sex acts and drank each other's urine at DeVitos nightclub in Arbroath.

    A court heard that the three Royal Marines have been thrown out of the military as a result of the case.

    Forfar Sheriff Court was told the incident was caught on CCTV.

    Lynch, 42, from Aberdeen, James, 22, from Thirsk, Bowen, 25, from Chichester, and Coia, 22, who was based at RM Condor, near Arbroath, each admitted a charge of public indecency committed in June.

  7. Kirby Misperton fracking demo police 'heavy-handed'published at 06:40 British Summer Time 27 October 2017

    Fracking protesters have criticised "heavy-handed" police behaviour after a video emerged of a campaigner being pulled over by an officer.

    North Yorkshire Police has had a regular presence in Kirby Misperton since May 2016, when Third Energy was given planning permission to operate.

    Protester Roy Openshaw said: "I was just standing there, suddenly I was finding myself being pulled over."

    The force said it had yet to receive a complaint from Mr Openshaw.
