    The city has the highest rate of fuel poverty in Yorkshire, when paying bills leaves someone below the poverty line.

  4. Sixth-form college part of teenage terrorism investigationpublished at 09:24 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2017

    Police say a sixth-form college in North Yorkshire is part of an investigation into suspected terrorist activities by two teenagers.

    Two 14-year-old boys from Northallerton are being questioned by counter terrorism police on suspicion of preparing an act of terrorism.

    They were arrested at their homes on Saturday. A number of properties have also been searched.

    The North East Counter Terrorism Unit says the arrests are part of an ongoing police-led inquiry.

    Since Saturday, searches have been carried out at three residential properties, and there have been reports of police activity at a disused garage in the town.

    Northallerton School and Sixth Form College (pictured) is also a focus of the investigation.

    In a statement, it says it is supporting the police in their investigation and is "working with them to support students and prioritise their safety at all times".

    The Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) is celebrating its 250th anniversary this year and has begun by launching a timeline of its history., external

    The LGI dates back to October 1767 where it was set up in a private house in Kirkgate, close to where Leeds Market is today.

    During the last two-centuries the hospital has been at the forefront of medicine, including developing the UK's first ever kidney and hand transplants.

    The new timeline shows key dates and figures who have shaped the hospital and it is displayed along the blue bridge in Jubilee wing.

    It concludes with ambitious plans to develop the LGI and Leeds Children’s Hospital which are in the early stages.

    Barnsley's Lamproom Theatre is raising money for a special project to celebrate its connection with the town's mining heritage.

    It already has several miners lamps in a display cabinet but now wants to add to the collection.

    But they now have an exciting idea, they want to use miners lamps as the house lights.

    The theatre hopes to raise the funds, external and get the work done in time for Autumn 2018.

    A four-year-old girl from Leeds is officially a record breaker, because of her remarkable gift for playing the xylophone.

    Laasya, from Beeston, can now play 75 tunes, from memory, on the instrument.

    She could play 33 tunes from memory on the instrument when she was just three-years-old.

  8. Government considered scrapping Sheffield-Rotherham tram-train schemepublished at 08:01 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2017

    A group of MPs has heard the government considered scrapping the Sheffield to Rotherham tram-train scheme because of spiralling costs.

    The UK's first tram-train scheme would enable trams to run on existing train tracks between Sheffield and Rotherham as well as on tram lines on the city streets.

    The scheme, originally due to cost £15m will now cost £75m and not be complete until May 2018, nearly three years overdue.

    Network Rail said the scheme was a "complex and challenging" one.

    Officials from Network Rail and the Department for Transport have been giving evidence to the Commons Public Accounts Committee.

    More than half of last night's White Rose Awards went to businesses in North Yorkshire.

    The annual event celebrates the best in tourism across Yorkshire.

    More than 100 businesses across the region were nominated.

    The Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate was named as Tourism Event of the Year, while Ripon's Fountains Abbey was named as Large Attraction of the year.

    Cricketer Ryan Sidebottom, who retired this year, was also honoured by being made a Yorkshire Patron.

  10. Campaigners march for inquiry into 'Battle of Orgreave' policingpublished at 07:34 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2017

    Campaigners who want an independent public inquiry into policing during the Battle of Orgreave during the Miners' Strike in 1984 will hold a march in Sheffield later.

    The protest will pass through the city centre to the law courts.

    It marks a year since the Home Secretary ruled that an inquiry was not required.

    The date of Monday, 18 June 1984 was the most violent day of the year-long miners' strike.

    Thousands of pickets met huge lines of police - who were brought in from all around the country - outside the Orgreave coke works near Rotherham.

    The miners wanted to stop lorry loads of coke leaving for the steelworks. The police were determined to hold them back.

    Police horses were sent to charge the crowd up the field and officers followed to make arrests.

    Many miners and police officers were injured.

    The family of a teacher who was murdered by a student are returning to court to challenge a coroner's decision not to call other pupils as inquest witnesses.

    Ann Maguire, 61, was stabbed to death by Will Cornick at Corpus Christi Catholic College, Leeds, in April 2014.

    Her family's call for a judicial review of West Yorkshire coroner Kevin McLoughlin's decision was rejected by a High Court judge in August.

    Now three judges at the Court of Appeal are to consider their case.

    Cornick, who was 15 at the time of the killing, admitted murdering Mrs Maguire and was later sentenced to life with a minimum term of 20 years.

    An inquest into her death is due to take place before a jury at Wakefield Coroner's Court on 13 November.

    They were arrested by counter terrorism officers on Saturday in the Romanby area of the town.

    The North East Counter Terrorism Unit says the arrests are part of an ongoing police led inquiry.

    Since Saturday, searches have been carried out at three residential properties, and there have been reports of police activity at a disused garage in the town.

    Detectives have permission to question the boys until Wednesday.

    They're currently being held at a police station in West Yorkshire.
