  2. A busy night at NI's ambulance HQpublished at 08:02 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2016

    It was a busy enough night for the 14 staff at the NI ambulance regional control centre. Since their shift started at 7.30pm last night, they've dealth with 196 emergency calls - 57 of those were the highest priority, category A.

    There are 17 active emergencies across Northern Ireland at the moment and a crew has just been dispatched to the west to deal with a cardiac arrest.

    Average waiting times for high-priority ambulance calls have risen nearly three minutes since 2013-14 - and the NI Ambulance Service says its targets are being missed because of the outdated system of categorising calls.

    The ambulance service says some category A calls were being miscategorised, and should be treated as serious but not life-threatening incidents.

    Members of the NASUWT teaching union are staging a one-day strike later over pay, job security and workload.

    The highest priority ambulance call-outs in Northern Ireland are taking longer to arrive than three years ago.

    On average, patients whose conditions are classed as life-threatening waited nearly three minutes longer in 2015-16 than they did in 2013-14.
