    As Storm Ali continues to surge, an Irish meme is beginning to reappear on Twitter and Facebook.

    In 2015, RTÉ reporter Theresa Mannion presented a live broadcast from a rain-drenched Galway during Storm Desmond.

    Her waterlogged report and warning of "don't make unnecessary journeys" quickly went viral.

    The Republic's capital is getting a severe lashing from Storm Ali - the strong winds has resulted in many of the city's main parks closing including Dublin Zoo, St Stephen's Green and the National Botanic Gardens.

    Ireland's National Ploughing Championships - one of the biggest outdoor events of its kind in Europe - has cancelled its second day because of Storm Ali.

    The three-day event is taking place in Tullamore, County Offaly. Anna Marie McHugh, of the National Ploughing Association, told RTÉ that tents had been damaged by high winds but that the competition would continue on Thursday.

    The event attracts about 100,000 people.

    There are now 65,000 customers in Northern Ireland and 186,000 in the Republic without power.

    Northern Ireland Electricity says power has been restored to 24,000 customers but that "conditions at present are extremely challenging".

    ESB, who oversee the electricity network in the Republic, says Cavan and Sligo are among the worst areas affected by power cuts.

    The Luas - Dublin's tram system - has been badly disrupted because of a fallen power line.

    Green line trams between Balally in south Dublin and Dominick on the north side - which ordinarily run through the city centre - have been cancelled.

    The Luas' operator Transdev said the issue could take hours to repair, adding: "This is not a quick fix."
