  3. 'Appealing to the converted'published at 16:42

    BBC News Channel

John Peet of the Economist tells the BBC News Channel that Jeremy Corbyn reached people in the conference hall but adds: "That's appealing to the converted and if he wants to be prime minister he's got to appeal to the unconverted - and I think he's going to find that very hard."

The Guardian's Polly Toynbee thinks that Labour will find forthcoming elections in Scotland, Wales and London difficult.

  6. 'Huge dissatisfaction with politics'published at 16:40

Shadow culture secretary Michael Dugher echoes the message that Labour is now "doing things differently". He argued that Jeremy Corbyn could reach out to voters who had deserted the party.

    Quote Message

I think there's huge dissatisfaction with politics as usual. That's true of Conservative voters, Ukip supporters, people who didn't vote at all, and I think Jeremy had a message for them today."

  8. 'Politics can be different'published at 16:32

Unison general secretary Dave Prentis gives another positive trade union take on the Labour leader's speech:

    Quote Message

Jeremy showed today that politics can be different. His vision of a kinder, more caring society will appeal to the many who have felt ignored by Westminster, and disconnected from its politicians, for so long. With this new approach, Labour can start to win back the many voters it has lost, by showing just how different it is from the cruel and brutal Tories, who are slashing public services, snatching away much-needed tax credits, and stopping people from having a voice at work."

  9. CBI response to Corbyn speechpublished at 16:30

CBI director general John Cridland says he doesn't recognise Jeremy Corbyn's characterisation of the UK economy. He says the recovery "is more balanced than Mr Corbyn argues".

    Quote Message

It is not based on a house price-fuelled asset bubble, but on business investment, which is spurring stronger wage growth and rising living standards. Far from driving down wages, globalisation has in fact drawn many people around the world out of poverty, offering hope and opportunity."

  13. 'Real alternative'published at 16:22

More trade union reaction, this time from one not affiliated to Labour. Matt Wrack, Fire Brigades Union general secretary, said:

    Quote Message

Corbyn's speech was one of hope, offering a real alternative to the Tory agenda of cuts, austerity and attacks on workers. Firefighters and trade unionists alike will be heartened to have a Labour leader who is on their side for once. Blairite MPs need to respect the wishes of the vast majority of Labour members and supporters who delivered Jeremy Corbyn a decisive leadership win. The campaign to elect Corbyn Labour leader was just the start, not the end of the campaign for a new politics that can deliver for working people."

  14. 'No whistles and bells'published at 16:20

Paul Kenny, GMB general secretary, gives his response to Jeremy Corbyn's speech:

    Quote Message

No whistles, no bells or flashing lights, just straight forward fresh politics about truth, compassion, decency and justice. I think this will resonate with the public who have been disillusioned with Westminster politics. Let us not forget that his job description is the leader of the opposition and this is very good start in that job."

  15. Smoking to be banned in prisonspublished at 16:18

Stepping back from the Labour conference for just a moment, BBC home affairs correspondent Dominic Casciani reports that the government is to ban smoking in prisons in England and Wales.

  16. 'Speaking from the heart'published at 16:17

    Andy BurnhamImage source, Getty Images

Here's a bit more of what Andy Burnahm, the shadow home secretary, has had to say:

    Quote Message

I think out there the public are crying out for a different way of politics, a different style of politics, they are fed up of the soundbites, the spin, they want to see authenticity, people who mean what they say and that's what you saw today from Jeremy Corbyn. He's fought all his political life for the things he was speaking about so it does come from the heart. That's what's been lacking in politics in recent times."

  17. McDonnell: No divisionspublished at 16:15

    John McDonnellImage source, Getty Images

Speaking about the atmosphere of the conference, the shadow chancellor said it was "a new world", welcoming that "we no longer have that controlled environment in which people are frightened of expressing their views and where, well to be frank, (there are) divisions".

  18. Corbyn reaching out to the publicpublished at 16:10

    BBC News Channel

Shadow transport secretary Lilian Greenwood tells the BBC there's "a real appetite" for the "straight-talking" politics of Jeremy Corbyn. She says people in her constituency have told her his approach is "refreshing". It's reaching out into the country and not just delegates in Brighton, she adds.

  19. McDonnell: Our values are British valuespublished at 16:06

Shadow chancellor John McDonnell says Jeremy Corbyn is "re-establishing the values of the Labour Party - they are his own personal values but they are socialist values as well".

    Quote Message

We're basically saying our values are the British values - that caring, compassionate society where we work together in the interests of everybody."
