Commentator Lance Price gives his reaction to the new Labour leader's first speech to conference. "I had low expectations and this fell well below them," he tells the Daily Politics. He says it was "rambling, unfocused and didn't speak to the country outside" - only Labour Party activists. He adds that it "had no recognition of why Labour lost the election".

  4. 'Let's put our values back into politics'published at 15:24

    Jeremy Corbyn

As he concludes his remarks, Jeremy Corbyn quotes Labour founder Keir Hardie as saying "My work has consisted of trying to stir up divine discontent with wrong".

"What words they are. What brilliance," remarks Mr Corbyn. His final message is this:

    Quote Message

Don't accept injustice, stand up against prejudice. Let us build a kinder politics, a more caring society, together. Let's put our values, the people's values, back into politics."

And with that, the Labour leader descends the stage and greets some of the assembled throng as he makes his way out of the conference hall - but not before a quick stop for the cameras to get their shots.

  8. Corbyn: Things can be differentpublished at 15:21

Jeremy Corbyn says the elite often say the world can’t be changed and “the many” should accept the terms on offer. Globalisation, he goes on, seems to always mean low pay for the poor but huge sums for chief executives of global corporations. But Labour's message is and always has been that "you don't have to take what you're given", he adds.

The Labour leader says David Cameron's Conservative Party receives huge sums from hedge fund managers and only wants to "protect the few". Hedge funds have been given "£145m in tax breaks" in return for their "£55m investment", he claims.

    Quote Message

They expect millions of people to work harder, longer and for less quality of life on lower wages. Well we're not having it. Our Labour Party says no."

  11. 'Decent homes'published at 15:15

"A secure home is out of reach for millions," continues Jeremy Corbyn. He pledges that under a Labour government there would be "a decent home for everybody".

On mental health issues, he challenges the Conservatives to make "parity of esteem" between mental and physical health a reality, rather than a slogan. Luciana Berger, the party's new shadow minister on mental health, is in the crowd, and applauds.

  12. Help for the self-employedpublished at 15:13

Jeremy Corbyn sets out his aim to extend statutory maternity and paternity pay to the self-employed "so all new born children get the same level of care from their parents". The shadow secretaries of state for business and work and pensions (Angela Eagle and Owen Smith) will look at how this can be done, he adds.

Turning to transport, he espouses his desire for the re-nationalisation of Britain's railways. And on housing, he calls for a big council house building programme, with affordable rents and purchase prices. This would profit taxpayers by reducing the housing benefit bill, he argues.

  15. 'People before profit'published at 15:10

"I'm proud of our history," says Jeremy Corbyn, who goes on to praise previous generations who have fought for the rights we enjoy today. He singles out the welfare state and the NHS and the BBC - and claims they are under threat from the Conservatives.

    Quote Message

So let me make this commitment: our Labour Party will always put people's interest before profit."

  16. 'Absurd lie'published at 15:08

The Labour leader pledges to fight cuts to tax credits and to "expose the absurd lie" that the Tories are on the side of workers. He says the government's "phoney" living wage increase won't compensate people for the money they lose.

Mr Corbyn reaches the much-trailed bit of his speech now, where he expresses his patriotism. He says Labour values are Britain's values and it will "put them back into the heart of the country".

    Quote Message

We want to rid Britain of injustice, to make it fairer, more decent, more equal and for all our citizens to benefit from prosperity and success."

  20. Corbyn: Cut out the abusepublished at 15:04

Jeremy Corbyn comes back to a phrase he has said many times during the leadership contest - that he doesn't believe in personal attacks.

"I want a kinder politics, a more caring society," he tells the Labour conference.

In a message to activists - Labour or not - he appeals: "Cut out the personal abuse, cut out the cyber bullying and especially the misogynistic abuse online and let's get back to the real politics." That's gone down particularly well in the chamber, who get to their feet in applause.

"I haven't finished," he can be heard saying as the applause goes on.
