Senior Labour MP Yvette Cooper has called for a "unity candidate" in the Labour leadership race to avoid "artificial rows".

Ms Cooper, the former work and pensions secretary, told the BBC: "I think we could end up with a general election before Christmas, so we need a unity candidate who can pull a strong team together, something that Jeremy Corbyn's not been able to do.

"And that's why I think I don't want to see artificial rows between good candidates when we should all be pulling together."

She added: "Owen and Angela are both very talented but we do need a single candidate."

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has called for "justice" to be delivered two years after 298 people, including 10 British nationals, were killed when MH17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine.

A report into the incident, produced last year by investigative authority the Dutch Safety Board, found the crash was result of a Russian-made Buk missile

Mr Johnson said: "The definitive technical report into the disaster by the Dutch Safety Board reached evidence-based conclusions reinforcing our view that a terrible crime had been committed.

"Justice must now be delivered. We continue to support the efforts of the Joint Investigation Team pursuing the criminal investigation which is vital to identifying those responsible and holding them to account."

  13. Second referendum would be 'most disastrous step'published at 11:56 British Summer Time 17 July 2016

    BBC Sunday Politics

Ms Stuart says it would be "the most disastrous step we can take" to hold another EU referendum and that politicians, particularly Labour, needed to "look and search" why they were "so out of step" with the electorate on the vote.

She adds: "They said we want to leave and they expect us to get on with the job now."

  14. Stuart fears second referendumpublished at 11:53 British Summer Time 17 July 2016

    BBC Sunday Politics

Ms Stuart is then asked whether she fears there will be a second referendum on the nature of the deal the UK agrees on with Europe. "Yes I do," she says.

"I think there's a real danger those who don't like the outcome of the referendum get themselves hooked on Article 50 and all kinds of votes rather than saying there's a new reality out there and we need to deal with that it in the best interests of the United Kingdom."

Mr Grieve is asked whether he would want a second referendum on the deal, to which he says "not necessarily".

He says the justification for this would be if there was a "legitimate question" that needed to be put to the electorate.

He says a referendum is a "statement at the time".

  15. Does Article 50 require a vote in Parliament?published at 11:48 British Summer Time 17 July 2016

    BBC Sunday Politics

    Gisela Stuart and Dominic Grieve

Both are then questioned about whether there needs to be a vote in Parliament to trigger Article 50.

Ms Stuart says "I don't think necessarily". She says the UK's EU exit is not just about the UK's relationship with the EU but also the rest of the world.

But Mr Grieve says "we undoubtedly need a vote in Parliament".

"The idea the government could take a decision of such massive importance to the UK without Parliamentary approval seems extremely far fetched," he says.

Ms Stuart adds that she can see the arguments for both sides.

She says it should be triggered "when we are ready" but it should happen "the sooner the better".

Mr Grieve says he thinks it should happen when there is "some clarity" about what the scope of the ensuing negotiations with the EU would be.
