    The Labour leadership contender, Owen Smith, has suggested the possibility of a second referendum on the UK's EU membership and said it would be "very tempting" not to trigger the Article 50 Brexit process.

    He told Andrew Marr: "I don't think we should accept we're on a definite path out. I think we need to make sure people are satisfied. We trusted people, rightly, to take the decision. We can trust them again in 18 months time to check it's absolutely what they wanted."

    The Independent reports that three-quarters of newspaper stories about Jeremy Corbyn in the first months of his Labour leadership either distorted or failed to represent his actual views on subjects, according to a study, external.

    “Our analysis shows that Corbyn was thoroughly de-legitimised as a political actor from the moment he became a prominent candidate and even more so after he was elected as party leader,” Dr Bart Cammaerts, the project director concluded.

    With the future leadership of Labour still in doubt, the journalist Nick Cohen has written a highly critical piece on the Guardian website about the current Labour leadership. 

    He writes: "Empty leftism gave Corbyn control of the Labour Party, but little else. 

    "He has the lowest popularity rating of any opposition leader in history. 

    "The public sees a political movement that doesn’t want to govern them and does not much like them either. 

    "Government necessarily involves the trade-offs the far left pretends need never trouble us."

    Both are asked if they would serve in Jeremy Corbyn's shadow cabinet if he wins a leadership contest. 

    Ms Eagle does not answer the question directly, but says Jeremy Mr has lost the confidence of the PLP and polls suggest he is not connecting with voters. 

    Mr Smith says he is not leaving the party, and would serve with Mr Corbyn if he wins.

    Asked further about how to decide who should stand against Mr Corbyn, Mr Smith says whoever got the most support in the Parliamentary Party would be the unity candidate. 

    Ms Eagle says the candidate needs to be the person who has the best chance of beating Mr Corbyn, which she said was her.

    Owen Smith says he thinks Angela Eagle would be a "great leader" and would serve under her. But he adds that he would be too.

    He says he and Ms Eagle share socialist views but says maybe it's time for a "new generation" of Labour leaders. 

    Ms Eagle then responds by saying she thinks "it's time for a woman" and also for someone who is experienced.

    Angela Eagle says she is from "northern working class stock" and her political mission was to get working class people the "opportunities to shine". 

    She says she "wiped the floor" with George Osborne at prime minister's questions.
