  5. More from Owen Smith on Brexitpublished at 09:48 British Summer Time 17 July 2016

    Alan Soady
    BBC political correspondent

The Labour leadership contender, Owen Smith, has suggested the possibility of a second referendum on the UK's EU membership and said it would be "very tempting" not to trigger the Article 50 Brexit process.

He told Andrew Marr: "I don't think we should accept we're on a definite path out. I think we need to make sure people are satisfied. We trusted people, rightly, to take the decision. We can trust them again in 18 months time to check it's absolutely what they wanted."

But he wouldn't commit firmly to a second referendum, saying it would depend on what kind of deal the UK was offered: "It will depend on what we've seen as the outcome of these Brexit negotiations."

On not triggering Article 50, he said: "I think that would be very tempting for the Labour Party, because we are a party that believes in being at the heart of Europe."

He added: "I don't think it's a binary choice. The reality is we don't know what those terms are going to look like. If it's next month I think it would be very difficult for the Labour Party after we've voted."
