So Jeremy Corbyn has been re-elected as Labour's leader with a larger mandate than a year ago.

There was plenty of talk from the leader and his supporters ahead of the result of "coming together" after a second bruising campaign.

He even provided proof on BBC TV that he was growing a diminutive olive tree outside his office - the presumed purpose of which is to break off a branch and proffer it to his internal opponents.

But some of the MPs who voted for a motion of no confidence in him believe that those around the leader will only sue for peace on their terms.

  19. The total victory of the Left?published at 12:36 British Summer Time 24 September 2016

    Lewis Goodall
    Newsnight producer

It's worth putting today's victory in historic context. Before 2015, the Labour left had never won a leadership election in the Labour Party. As of today it's won twice in just over a year. Even in Tony Benn's heyday, he couldn't quite manage to defeat Denis Healey for the deputy leadership. The Labour Party has always been controlled essentially by an exchange between the party's right and soft left, to varying degrees of success. Power between left and right was shared across the different institutions of the party.

Today virtually every organ of Labour: the trade unions, the NEC, the leadership, the membership are scions of the Left. The only redoubt of moderate strength are the MPs, and if today proves anything, it's how little they matter.

Jeremy Corbyn and his team has totally bypassed them. In its 116 year history, the Labour left has never been more powerful. Like it or not, it's a party transformed.
