    The BBC has collared a few senior Labour figures ahead of the result announcement.

    "We we are very good at putting ourselves back together but think I should go and see the result," said deputy leader Tom Watson.

    Former Foreign Secretary Dame Margaret Beckett denies that the party has been wasting time on infighting: "I think we've been engaged in a mature discussion about the direction of the party in the future."

    Scottish Labour leader Kezia Dugdale said: "I know that everyone at this conference is determined to unite the party and that's what we'll get on and do."

    Former soap-actress Tracy Brabin has been selected as Labour's candidate for the Batley and Spen by-election prompted by the killing of Jo Cox.

    The Coronation Street, EastEnders and Emmerdale star was chosen as the party's candidate ahead of fellow nominee Jane Thomas.

    Mrs Cox, who was MP for Batley and Spen, was shot and stabbed in Birstall, West Yorkshire, on 16 June.

    The by-election will take place on 20 October.

    "Wanted - tolerance and compromise," says the Guardian, external in its editorial on the leadership contest.

    "The Guardian would welcome an electable, effective Labour Party as an indispensable part of progressive politics," the article says.

    The paper calls for the result of the leadership election to be "respected" but argues that Labour should now be judged on "three main things":

    "The first is the leader’s ability to bring the party together again, not force it apart. That means mutual respect for all Labour’s currents of thought, not purges.

    "The second is his ability to reach out to the electorate and build support.

    "And the third is the leader’s need to draw up a properly costed economic and social programme for government in the national interest, above all in relation to Brexit, in a general election that may come as early as next year."

    In an interview in the Mirror, external on the eve of the Labour conference, shadow cancellor and Corbyn ally John McDonnell "accepts there have been a 'few harsh words' exchanged during the leadership battle but there will an intensive effort to win back those MPs who resigned from the frontbench earlier this summer".

    Mr McDonnell said: “We have said to them ‘what was said on tour remains on tour and that’s it."

    The article continues "a 'large proportion' of the MPs who rebelled will serve in some form, he predicted."

    "Asked if this could include Hilary Benn, the former shadow foreign secretary, he replied: 'Of course, we have not put any exclusions down whatsoever.'"

    Victoria Derbyshire is joined by two Labour MPs, with just a short time to go before the result is announced.

    Shadow defence secretary Clive Lewis supports the words of Andy Burnham on Breakfast earlier, saying that the "the party just has to get together". He thinks Labour can take on "a potentially very fractious Conservative Party".

    Jonathan Ashworth thinks "the Tories are in a mess on their fiscal rules" and also hopes Labour will come together to oppose them.

    He speculates that Mr Corbyn will win "by quite a handsome margin".

    Mr Lewis, a Corbyn supporter, agrees and speculates that elections to the shadow cabinet could be offered in return for no more front bench rebellions against the leader.

    BBC assistant political editor Norman Smith says Jeremy Corbyn won over 59% of the vote in the leadership election in 2015 and some of his supporters "think they can push that up to over 65%" this time.

    Norman thinks this could make Mr Corbyn "bomb proof" for the rest of the current Parliament, with hostile MPs unable to move against him.

    The "acid test that he now faces", Norman adds, is whether he can bring Labour together.

    Brendan Cox, husband of the Labour MP Jo Cox who was killed in June, has met President Obama in the Oval Office.

    Mr Cox's visit to the White House with his two children followed an invitation from the president on 17 June. Mr Obama had called to offer his sincere condolences on behalf of the American people.

    White House Official said the president had "reminded Mr Cox and his children that the selfless service to others of their late mother had made the world a better place, and reaffirmed their shared commitment to carry on the legacy of her work".

    Following the Labour leadership announcement this morning in Liverpool, football fans sitting in the Kop will unfurl a banner supporting Jeremy Corbyn and John McDonnell just before kick off in their match against Hull City today.

    Roy Bentham, co-secretary of the Blacklist Support Group, who are behind the banner, said:

    "The banner is really about recognition for Jeremy and John's tireless efforts in campaigning for social justice wherever that may be.

    "We are proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with them as they have with us on our long paths to justice."

    Sam Tarry from Jeremy Corbyn's campaign tells the BBC he is "quietly confident that Jeremy will have a decent-sized victory today".

    He says that MPs who deserted the front bench chose "the wrong time" to do so, adding: "Now we need to work together to find a way to take on the Tories."

    He says MPs who have been, in his words, "attacking the party and attacking Jeremy have a lot to answer for".

    He calls the shadow cabinet revolt "irresponsible" at "a time of national crisis" following the Brexit vote.
