David Lidington's move to the Cabinet Office means the PM will be looking for a new justice secretary, the fifth time the post has changed hands in almost seven and a half years.

The Criminal Bar Association is worried about the turnover in the job and hopes the new incumbent will bring some stability to the department.

"Successive governments have made counterproductive and unjustified cuts to funding," said Angela Rafferty, the association's chair.

"With the fifth change of secretary of state for justice in under five years the public will rightly require reassurance that justice is given priority. This is critical for stable civil society and the rule of law.”
