  1. Recap: What we know so farpublished at 12:45 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2018

It's been a while since the reshuffle started - but we've heard very little officially so far.

Northern Ireland Secretary James Brokenshire has quit for health reasons as he awaits treatment for a lesion on his lung.

Tory Chairman Sir Patrick McLoughlin has left his post, but we don't yet know who will replace him (it was briefly thought to be Chris Grayling after a hastily-deleted Conservative tweet, now Brandon Lewis, who has been into No 10, looks more likely).

We expect to hear more appointments, like any replacement for former First Secretary of State Damian Green, as the afternoon goes on.

  9. DUP MP Gavin Robinson on Brokenshire resignationpublished at 12:05 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2018

Northern Ireland secretary quit on health grounds

    Quote Message

I’m sorry to see James go under those circumstances and I think it’s important that we wish him well. The Secretary of State’s job is huge not least because of the difficulties we’re currently having about the restoration of the executive and there’s a huge job of work to do. We have no budget for the forthcoming financial year, that is going to be a key priority for the coming weeks so it is important that we get somebody who is not only prepared to engage in the job but do so very quickly and read into the job very quickly indeed.”

  15. An update from Brussels...published at 11:36 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2018

    Adam Fleming
    Brussels reporter

The former UKIP leader Nigel Farage has finished his meeting with the EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier at the European Commission in Brussels.

As he departed, Mr Farage said it was clear that Mr Barnier did not understand why the UK voted to leave.

Mr Farage also speculated that the EU would offer the UK a free trade deal covering goods but not including financial services, and he expressed disappointment that immigration hadn’t been dealt with in the Brexit process so far.

Asked about reports that UKIP’s leader Henry Bolton is in a relationship with a young activist, Mr Farage told reporters: “At least he’s being written about… You can’t get elected if no-one knows who you are.”

    Justine Greening's future

Head teachers in England say any reshuffle of ministers needs to be more than "window dressing" - and must get to grips with core problems over school funding and staffing shortages.

Jules White, who led a protest by 5,000 schools over funding, says these "massive issues" must be tackled.

It comes alongside speculation over the future of Education Secretary Justine Greening.

Mr White, a West Sussex head teacher who has co-ordinated letters sent to 2.5 million parents over school funding concerns, says that whoever is education secretary needs to make a priority of teacher supply and funding.

  19. 'Even Thatcher and Blair had to balance their teams'published at 11:15 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2018

    BBC News Channel

Much has been said about the need for Theresa May to keep a balance within her cabinet between both sides of the EU debate.

Conservative MP Chris Philp says this is no different to the situation facing previous prime ministers.

"Even Margaret Thatcher or Tony Blair at the height of their powers had to balance their ministerial team to reflect a range of opinions." he says.

Mr Philp says this is a good thing because it avoids a government becoming "skewed one way or another".
