  4. Davis for Tory leadership?published at 13:42 British Summer Time 9 July 2018

    David DavisImage source, PA

David Davis has now become one of the front runners to replace Theresa May as Tory leader, according to one betting firm.

Betway has put the odds at 7/1 now he is out of a job and may be seeking a new challenge.

But BetFred and Paddy Power still have him as 16/1, with 10Bet going as far as 40/1.

The most likely replacements for the top job, according to various betting firms, seem to be either Environment Secretary Michael Gove, Home Secretary Sajid Javid or backbencher Jacob Rees-Mogg - all with odds around 4 or 5/1.

And Boris Johnson is down to between 10 and 12/1.

    John Redwood

Pro-Brexit Tory MP John Redwood said he wasn't surprised when David Davis resigned - in fact, he said he was surprised no-one had resigned sooner following the "muddled" and "contradictory" statement from Chequers.

He told BBC News: "I hope the prime minister now revisits the Chequers statement and realises it is not what the big bulk of the MPs want, it is not what the overwhelming majority of the members of the party want, it's not what the 17.4 million Brexit voters want and adjusts it."

    Vince Cable

The Brexit deal is a "mess" and "not workable" says Liberal Democrat leader Sir Vince Cable.

He said he admired they way Theresa May had tried to "dilute" Brexit with the deal done at Chequers and "craft something that is acceptable to largest number".

But, he added: "David Davis made it very clear it is just not workable and if you look at the mechanics of it, it is something that is going to encourage smuggling, large scale bureaucracy and it will be very difficult to see how the European Union will accept it anyway.

"For two years we have had an internal British conversation between different factions of the Conservatives. Labour are also divided and confused.

"There is no consensus and there isn't likely to be."

    Andrea Leadsom

Andrea Leadsom said she was staying in the cabinet as she has her "eyes fixed on the prize".

There were rumours she may follow David Davis and resign from her role as leader of the House.

But she told the Daily Politics she is a "massive believer" in Brexit and wants to see it through.

Ms Leadsom also defended the Chequers deal, which led to Mr Davis resigning.

"David Davis has been a voice of calm throughout this and in return we have received insults and stonewalling (from the EU)," she said.

"This keeps the prize and means we are leaving the European Union," she said.

  18. Baker wants Brexit 'to be proud of'published at 11:51 British Summer Time 9 July 2018

    The Daily Politics

Steve Baker says the reality of leaving the EU is a "very difficult process" and said the government has made a "series of mistakes" in the build up.

He told the Daily Politics the "establishment" in Britain still wants to remain and they have not been convinced by Leave campaigners.

But he added: "It is no good going forward with this recalcitrant spirit of fear and supplication as we negotiate.

"Instead of doing things because we must, because are forced or because we ought to, we need to positively choose to leave the European Union well.

"Let's leave the European Union in a way of which we can be proud and that means vision, ambition and determination."

  20. Baker: 'We have been blindsided by PM's policy'published at 11:42 British Summer Time 9 July 2018

    The Daily Politics

    Steve Baker

Steve Baker, who followed David Davis in resigning from his ministerial position, says his department was "blindsided" by Theresa May's Brexit plan.

It's different from the White Paper the department had been working on, he says.

Mr Baker calls it a "significant evolution" from Mrs May's speeches on the issue, saying: "Things have changed considerably this week."

Mr Baker said he had to resign as he was not able to represent the plan as his own policy.
