  10. Rees-Mogg: Remain approach 'did the damage'published at 09:40 British Summer Time 9 July 2018

    Jacob Rees-MoggImage source, PA

Theresa May is more damaged by her proposals at Chequers than by David Davis' resignation, which seek to "stymie" Brexit, Jacob Rees-Mogg MP says.

Speaking on LBC, the Tory backbencher and prominent Brexiteer said he didn't think a no confidence vote in the PM was "immediately in the offing", but she needs to change direction.

"I think what the prime minister needs to do is to give up on the Chequers proposals, which David Davis in his resignation letter has pointed out don't actually deliver Brexit," he said.

"The problem with Chequers is the prime minister was very clear that Brexit would mean Brexit.

"She made a number of statements indicating she was going to do it properly and then she has decided to have a basically Remainer approach to negotiations and that is what has done her damage."

"Hope you have a lovely day, thank you very much," he said, getting into his ministerial car.

  17. PM's Brexit plan 'in grave danger'published at 09:16 British Summer Time 9 July 2018

    Chris Mason
    Political Correspondent

Our political correspondent Chris Mason says: "It [Davis' resignation] means in the short term the prime minister has this gaping hole in her government... working out who the successor should be.

"In the broader sense it means that plan that was two years in the making… it was thrashed out and so we thought agreed upon at Chequers on Friday... looks, a couple of days on, to be in grave danger."

  18. MEPs react to Davis resignationpublished at 09:15 British Summer Time 9 July 2018

    Today Programme
    BBC Radio 4

MEPs have begun to voice their opinions on Mr Davis' resignation.

Sophia in 't Veld, deputy to the European Parliament's chief Brexit negotiator, Guy Verhofstadt, said the move "does not contribute to the image of a stable government".

The Dutch MEP told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "It took the government two years to come to a common position on the post-Brexit era and then just two days later a senior government minister resigns.

"It's difficult. The clock is ticking."

One London MEP, Labour's Claude Moraes, said Mr Davis' promised Brexit was "undeliverable" and he had never been "up to the job".

  19. EU sees Davis as 'cameo role'published at 09:13 British Summer Time 9 July 2018

    Katya Adler
    Europe Editor

The BBC's Europe editor Katya Adler said the news that David Davis was resigning was received in Brussels "with huge interest, but not [with] huge surprise".

One person told her that the Brexit Secretary had not really played more than "a cameo role in the past four months" as he was hardly ever there, and there had been "clear frustration" from the EU's chief negotiator Michel Barnier as a result.

She added that Olly Robbins, Theresa May's chief European aide, was seen as "the real Brexit secretary" in Brussels.

  20. Some observations on David Davis, the signaturepublished at 09:07 British Summer Time 9 July 2018
